2nd Trimester

If you are a 2nd time (or more) mom . . . a housekeeping question

Is your house always acceptable for company?  I feel like my fellow mom-friends here are always saying, "Sure, come over tomorrow!" Or, "Stop by anytime this afternoon!"  These ladies aren't close friends, just play-date type friends, so I haven't come right out and asked them, but it appears that their houses stay acceptable for guests to come over.  MY house, on the other hand, is always a disaster, unless our maid has come within the past 48hours.  And since she only comes every other week, the place is usually a wreck and I would be embarrassed for someone other than family to see it.  So if we have people over, we need a couple of days' notice.

Does your house stay neat & clean all the time?

  • heck no! I have animals, and I don't vac everyday.  But I like to have the house freshly vac'd when guests come over.  As far as having things picked up - I usually can run through the house and make it tidy-ish in about 25min.  But it's the vacumming that usually takes time.

  • Our house isn't always thoroughly cleaned (like, floor might not be swept and counters might not be wiped off), but it's not gross by any means. There're a lot of toys and random stuff on the floor, but I could pick it up in 5 minutes. I'd feel comfortable having someone drop by if I knew 5-10 minutes ahead of time and could do a quick clean-up.

But, I don't have a 2-year-old, so I'm sure it will get harder to keep the house clean as DD gets older.

  • No way.  I always need at least a day.  Even before having kids.  I'm a slob and so is DH.  It's always "CLEAN..."  It's just messy.

  • Mine is always a disaster.  Especially since I got pregnant thanks to the hypothyrodism exhaustion.  That and I work 50 hours a week 3rd shift along with taking care of a 2 year old.  Housework definitely takes a backseat.

  • i'm getting better at keeping it organized since we have a playroom now...but don't ever ask to see my playroom unless i've had at least 2 days notice that you were coming.

my biggest problem is laundry and it sucks that my machines are in the bathroom, b/c the bathroom always looks like a department store vomited on the floor.

Bahahahahahahahaha!!!!! H3LL NO! Don't get me wrong, my house does look neat and clean at times, when my son is asleep and my other child (aka DH) is at work and not throwing his worn clothes all over the house or using 5 yes 5 plates to make ONE snack! I feel like I am always cleaning, yet I feel like my house is always on the verge of looking like I belong on clean house (or is it messy house?).

  • Ummmm NO!!!  It might look acceptable to some people but I have a pretty high standard and I have to say I have let my standard go since starting this school year and being pregnant.  By the end of the week it is bad....Saturday is my cleaning day so if someone comes by before Saturday... watch out !!!!

  • My house is 'okay.'  It's never dirty, but it is sometimes cluttered.  I've been making sure to clean up the kitchen nightly so that helps, but things still get cluttered elsewhere.

I'd say that I only need 10 mins or so to have the house looking good for guests, plus maybe another 10 to vacuum if I'm gonig all out.

But I'm a SAHM and we have our house on the market so I have a little more time and reason to keep it cleanish.

  • I should clarify that the rooms that GUESTS would see can be cleaned fairly quickly...the living room, kitchen, main bathroom. Our bedroom, laundry room, and spare bathroom are a DISASTER. But company wouldn't see those so I don't care. ;)

  • um, no. It's usually kind of a wreck (not dirty, per se, but not spotless by any stretch).  However, I don't think twice about inviting my mom friends over at a moment's notice, even if my house is messy. They work full time and have kids too.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Right now it's on the market, so yes, it is spotless and it's the biggest PITA ever!

Normally it's not suitable for company, but could be made ready in a hour or so.

  • My DD is only 7 weeks old so maybe I'm not qualified to answer yet since she's pretty easy, but my house is always decently acceptable. Really when people come over all they have to see is the kitchen, living room, and bathroom right? I can straighten it up enough with an hour's notice. Half an hour if I do it half assed.

  • we clean up every evening after roo goes down and in the morning after breakfast.  its never perfect for a last minute visit, but if someone is coming over in 10 minutes its easy to pick-up.  if i don't want people seeing myhouse in filth, chances are we don't want to live in it.
  • I have one law: The living room stays clean. No kid toys are allowed in there. The carpet may not always be vacuumed, but there are never things filthing up the floors, coffee/end tables, or cups/plates hanging out on the back of the couch. It's my area of respite. The kid's playroom can be a mess, because kids play there and it's to be expected. I don't care about the kitchen because that's DH's realm to clean. The dining room is usually in good order, as is the downstairs bathroom. The sink may not be perfectly white, but as long as there are towels hung and you can see your face in the mirror it's fine with me.

The upstairs can be a bit of a pigsty sometimes, but my bedroom is always clean. I always feel refreshed walking in there and it not being a mess.
