I hate it, and the reason is that I can't stand both of the widely used nicknames for it, Alex and Xander.
I do love the flow and sound of the full name though, so I would consider it as a middle name, but not a first name where it would most likely get shortened.

As a name I think it's fine, I've just met so many people with a version of the name over the years, Alexander, Alexandra, Alexis, Alexa, etc. I don't mind Alex as a nn as some other people said, I just associate too many people with the name and I didn't like a lot of the people I met with names derived from Alexander.
Well, as you can see from my siggy, we like it. We both do like Alexander better than Alex but not enough to call him that ALL the time or make everyone else call him that (especially since we like Will better than William). It wasn't my top choice but DH and I had a very hard time agreeing on names. And I'm cracking up to find out that lovemy2boys hates it when I've always noticed how similar her name opinions are to mine 95% of the time.
It is VERY popular though; it was #12 when we were choosing and moved up to #8 the year our boys were born. And here I was glad it was at least out of the top 10.
