  I am personally against it, just because it does qualify as an illegal substance in most of the US. However I know a few friends who believe it should become legal for medical use only. Smoking in general is a huge no-no for me to be around or apart of, I really have a hard time breathing around smoke, near asthmatic attacks. If it became a medical use drug, I'd see no problem with it outside of pregnancy and in controlled perscription amounts.

  personally, i try to stay away from ALL drugs - OTC, Rx, or illegal, so I am not pro-pot.  i think that if you want to go "med-free" that should include any pain management drugs, including pot.  to me, that would be considered augmenting labor.

  Exactly. When I read that thread, I was agreeing with most things I read. Then I got to a post where the woman said that she wanted to feel everything, and drugs were drugs.

  But I also agreed with the woman who said that it is amazing that doctors can administer epidurals and some dangerous drugs to pregnant woman, but marijuana is illegal. That one is funny to me.

  I wouldn't use it during labor, but if you forced me to choose between an epidural and legal marijuana, I would hands down take marijuana.

  I definitely wouldn't especially for the reason of possibly having to be transfered and the hospital finding drugs in my and my baby's system. I wouldn't even if it was legal, because you really don't know what type of high you'd have, sometimes it actually enhances physical sensations. Also, I want a med free birth and in my head pot=meds. Plus I wouldn't want to give birth to a baby with drugs in his/her system and possibly have problems breastfeeding, and then if breastfeeding was successful, get my baby even more stoned (I think it's pretty concentrated in breastmilk). I don't think really any good would come of it.

  Doctors can prescribe a lot of things that are controlled substances. That doesn't mean people should be able to self medicate however they see fit. One is regulated by someone with a medical degree. The other is not. I don't see how the two compare.

   I also agree w/ the pp'ers. I limited the amount of drugs I took during pregnancy. I think I only took tylenol on a few occasions, and even then I used that sparingly. I cut out caffeine. Tried to eat healthy. I exercised. Pot, to me, does not comport with any of those things.

  Yeah, that was/is a really good point - homebirthers have it hard enough if they have to transfer, can you imagine if it was discovered the laboring mom was smoking pot - aieeee!
  

  I dunno, to each her own - though not for me, definitely. I'm sure pot's been used in the past to help relax a laboring mother. And there's midwives (and doctors?) who suggest a glass of wine to help calm you down, so meh...humans have been using various substances/drugs to get through various situations since the beginning of time.

  I wasn't comparing the two. I was re-stating a comment someone in that thread had posted about the irony of what drugs are legal, and which ones aren't. Just because a doctor prescribes something doesn't mean it's safe. That has been proven many times over the years.

  I agree about limiting any drugs during pregnancy. I actually did not take any medication before I was pregnant, so I am continuing with that, and will also continue to do so when I am in labor.

  Not to mince words but saying you agreed with it and noting that doctors prescribing epidurals and women smoking pot during labor = comparing the two.

  It is true that not all drugs are safe, which is why I don't see the appeal for anyone to smoke pot during labor. At least with an epidural there have been dozens of years of babies born with them for us to know the good and the bad. Marijuana use is too much of an unknown.

  I assume she is having a home birth, but what if she needs to transfer to a hospital?  If you show up to the hospital obviously under the influence or they have any reason to suspect it, big problems.  If you or your baby tests positive for illegal drugs, you are most likely getting your baby taken away by the state and it is a LOOOONG process to get them back.

  So no way is it worth that risk.

  Thanks for posting this. Definately an interesting article (I LOVE that site btw)

  I'm still up in the air in my opinion of the issue though. I can see pos/negs for both sides.
