New to The Bump

Is a late first ob appointment okay?

I found out I was pregnant around 8 weeks and my doctor told me they couldnt get me in until almost 13 weeks!!! at first I said ok and didnt think much about it but now i'm freaking out!!! I should be getting my SECOND sonogram by then!  What should I do?

Re: Is a late first ob appointment okay?

  • Some doctors will only give you 2 u/s, one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks. So getting one at 13 weeks doesn't seem that out-there to me.

Really, there's not much they're going to do at this stage in the game, so why blow the time and copay? At 8 weeks my SIL spent an hour filling out paperwork. That's it.

  • now, Im not an expert at this or anything, but I had my first appointment at just after 7 weeks, but all they did was medical history, and bloodwork, and a urine sample... you wouldn't neccessarily have had 2 sonograms by then, as my first won't be until 10 weeks... maybe I'm wrong, but I'm sure its fine.. if you aren't totally attached to your doctor, then there is no shame in finding a different one that can get you in sooner, as long as you are young, and healthy, you don't have much to worry about.. (Much easier said than done, I know, as I am a nervous wreck)

    Just be patient. :)

  • I didn't have my first apt til I was almost 12 weeks.  My Dr did an u/s and then I went and did all my blood work.  It was nice because I was far enough along to get the u/s and got to knock out the blood work all in one visit.  I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 9 weeks and I couldn't get in at first either.  I was freaking out at first, but it turned out great.  I hate getting blood taken or anything with needles, but the u/s picture was a great thing to be looking at while the blood work was being done.

Congrats on the pregnancy and good luck!

  • I've only had two appointments so far, but at the first one they asked me a ton of questions and did a pap, then at the second one they listened to the heartbeat.  Oh yeah, and both times I had to pee in a cup.  No u/s till 20 weeks.

  • It should be fine...

I did not find out I was expecting until I was 22 weeks along and this was found by my gyn office (no OB).  They did what they called a viability scan when the pregnancy was found.  It took another 2 weeks to get in to see the high-risk doctor and another week after that to get an appointment to see and OB.  I did miss the window on a lot of testing but the two offices have worked to get me caught up.

I am considered high-risk due to the combination of being diabetic (T2), 39 years old & the lack of prenatal care.

On my ultrasounds everything looks great.
