New to The Bump

Newbie & have questions

Hi Ladies!  This is the first time I've been on the bump!  My sister just had a baby two weeks ago, and I knew he was going to make it hit me like a ton of bricks (tick tock).  DH and I have been married for almost 2 yrs and we are both 31.  DH started a business and he really needs more business before we can be ready.  I know people always say you'll never have enough money, but we've been struggling just to make ends meet.  We rent out the downstairs of our house, and would have to have the space for a baby.  So, my concerns are finances and age.  I'm just starting to do research about my age.  We would like to have 2 kids and I have heard that 35 is advanced maternal age.  That would be great if anyone could point me in the right direction of where to start my research.  Thanks!

Re: Newbie & have questions

  • Your age is fine. If you start in a couple of years you should be fine.

Over 35 is considered AMA, but that just means they will recommend additional testing to rule out things like Down's syndrome, etc. These issues tend to happen more often over time, and they had to choose a cutoff point to aggressively test for it. 35 was the age where the risk of there being an issue is equal to the risk of m/c from an amnio.

Plenty of people have had issues either conceiving or with their child having problems when they were under 35, just as plenty of people over 35 have had no issues.

I have no idea where you'd start your research, but be careful with where you look online. You'll likely find a lot of conflicting information. Best bet is to have a frank conversation with your ob/gyn and see if they can address your concerns.

  • I read the book "What to Expect Before You're Expecting" and it had so much great information about trying to get pregnant and fertility rates, etc.  I know if you are TTC after a certain age it can mean more time trying (often a year average, so that's something to plan for, also).  Also, we read the book "Financial Peace" by Dave Ramsey which has some great practical advice with a flat-out plan on how to handle money and literally has steps to help out with budgeting and finances.  Good luck with it all!
