I think 12 is a good age, but to be honest...I may let my 8 year old start earlier than that. She's a miniature sasquatch. She gets it from me, my family is Cuban, so we're really hairy. Poor thing is COVERED. I know I started like, in 5th grade. My mother was mad when my stepdad gave me a safety razor. Remember the round ones with the wire around the blade?

I think I started shaving in 6th grade. I think it should depend on the kid, not a specific age. I don't think any girl should have to feel embarrassed by body hair because her parents don't think she's old enough to shave.

I said Special Snowflake because I think that it is really hard to assign an arbitrary age to that especially when my DD is so young. I will say though, if she is anything like me, she won't even need to start thinking about it until Middle School. She is very fair and blonde, but I think if she had taken on more of her Italian father's features, it might be a different story.
As for her arms? Um, never! Do woman really do that? Maybe I am just naive because again, I am fair, but that would have never even crossed my mind.

I said SS. When she's embarrassed or bothered by it - no arbitrary age. I don't think 9 or 10 is too early for underarms. I think I did legs in 7th grade, but I have really fair leg hair (unlike the thick curly brown hair on my head - I'm lucky, it could have been bad). Heck, I barely shave now...
I've never heard of shaving arms - did you mean underarms?
My DD is 10. She is light haired, but still pretty hairy. She hasn't asked to shave yet. I figure if she asks, it will be closer to the summer or the beginning of the next school year when she is 11 and will be entering middle school. I would teach her to do her legs and when she gets underarm hair.
However, my SD (stepdaughter) is 9 also has light hair and is significantly less hairy than my DD and we found out Friday that her mother taught her to shave her legs and her arms (and no, I don't mean underarms- she doesn't have underarm hair yet.) Her mom never shaved her arms the entire time she and DH were together (9 yrs) so we don't know if this is something she is doing now or what, but we have never heard of anyone shaving their arms aside from swimmers. We just think that it could lead to extra body image issues with SD now having to worry about arm hair which is something totally normal to have. I'm not sure why anyone would teach a 9 yr old to do that. DH is going to try to talk to SD's mom about it but he doesn't know how that will go over. He already told SD he doesn't think she should shave her arms anymore. So I thought I would do a poll to get several opinions.
As of now my oldest (8 years) has pretty much no hair on her legs so for her it might be awhile. I do not have a set age for my girls (3 of them), they will shave when they have enough hair to do so and it causes issues for them.

My guess is SD was feeling self conscious about the hair. You'd be surprised at what kids that age get teased about in school.
I think it would depend on how hairy the child is. I mean if a simple tool like a razor can prevent name calling, psychological trauma, and the need for life long therapy then I am all for it. Lets just say, If I had a daughter with a unibrow or mustache I would definitely shave it when she started grade school. Legs are a little different. I think that can wait a bit longer but once again it depends on the hairiness.

Re: Poll: What age will (or did you) let DD shave?
If she is embarrassed about her hair, I'll let her shave.
I started in 5th grade. So I would have been 10.
