Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is your child using a spoon properly?

If so, at what age did this start happening?

J uses it for 2.5 seconds and then digs in with his hands.

I know this question has been asked many times, so I'll apologize in advance.

Re: Is your child using a spoon properly?

  • Yes he is, Forks and spoons. He still uses his hands from time to time but that's okay. He feeds himself 100%. I can't complain.

  • I havent let S use a spoon or fork yet, I guess I just never thought of it. She uses her hands now, but I think I am going to start letting her use a spoon/fork soon..

  • Yeah, he does pretty well.  He also uses a fork well.  He still uses his fingers a lot too.  We started giving him a fork and spoon for most meals at the beginning of the summer.  I would give him oatmeal or cream of wheat.  He also did well with yogurt.  He still gets a lot of food on him.

    Oh, yes. Same here.

DS has the same outfit your son has on in the sig pic. It was my favorite of his summer clothing, so he wore it quite often :).

  • DS could start using the spoon at 13 months but only for a short time. But now if it's something with a thinner consistency (applesauce, yogurt etc.) we use a spoon. Things that are thicker we use a fork and he stabs the food. He is a pretty clean eater overall and will only use his right hand to pick up and eat food lol (I use a plastic bib I got from Babies R Us which I LOVE!!

  • No way. She understands that it needs to go into her mouth but she misses, lol.

Love your new siggy. J is such a cutie.

    Thanks!

I saw A's 12 mo. pics on your blog (after someone else commented on the cuteness, lol). She is such a beautiful little girl. And the dangly earrings are precious.

    I really want a daughter someday :).

  • She understands the concept but fails lol.  She has issues getting food onto her spoon but she can get the spoon to her mouth after attempting to get food on it.  Forks she does ok with if the food isn't too hard to get onto the fork.
  • We give DD a spoon and/or fork and it usually ends up on the floor. She can put chunks of food on the spoon and will try and get it to her mouth. Half the time it falls off before it gets there though. If we give her something with a thinner consistency (applesauce, yogurt, etc) she might play with the bowl and spoon but she won't really attempt to use them on her own (we help guide the spoon to her mouth)

Our pedi said to just let her play with the utensils for now and attempt to use them as she wishes. He said right now it's all about the exposure/practice... he wasn't worried that she couldn't do it yet :)

  • Yes, she does. I can't remember for sure when she started, but it was well before 18 months (I remember they asked that question at the well-check). She still uses her hands sometimes, but she does know the correct way.

  • Kiddo has been able to use a spoon for a long time (although he still holds it overhanded) - since before he was one.  Obviously, he is much better with one now than when he started and rarely spills.  We started giving him one to try as soon as we started solids so he's had lots of practice.

    Well, she holds the correct end and she puts the spoon part in her mouth, but usually after turning it upside down or waving it in the air or turning it into a trebouchet.   i'm still the one feeding her spoony foods most of the time;

  • T is 20 months and I'm pretty impressed with how well she does with a spoon. She can eat oatmeal, yogurt, or applesauce pretty well, especially now that she has stopped turning the spoon upside down as she puts it in her mouth.

My favorite forks are the gerber ones with rubbery handles and metal tines from target. They were the sharpest I could find and actually poke the food well. I like the take and toss spoons, but the forks are useless.

  • No LO doesnt use a spoon on his own... our pedi said around 18 months they can kind of use spoons properly. LO likes when I feed him a bite and then he removes the spoon, pretends to eat with itand hands it back to me..

  • Not at all at your LOs' age! We introduced them around 13m or so but they just played with them for a long time. They started having *some* luck with forks around 15m and doing OK with spoons by 18-19m. Will is now decent with a spoon (though still messy) but Alex is VERY messy.

  • Spoons- no. She gets angry, throws it, and uses her hands.

But with a ford (the fork is metal and the handle is rubber) she will eat for a while until she can't get what she wants and then tosses that too.

  • he has just begun pretending to eat with it, though he'll go back and forth from sticking it in the bowl of food and licking it (usually upside down) to chewing on the handle.

    so, I think we're in transition-mode here.
