Hey everyone,
I am a teacher, and pre-pregnancy I used to think I had a great immune system, I never got sick, maybe only once a year. Well, here I am, 2 months into the school year and I've got a cold. I can't even count how many green snot nosed kids I see and come into contact with each week, but they have got me! I'm sick and I can't kick it. My Doc gave me a list of safe meds and I have been taking Robitussen DM. The cough is so harsh it hurts in my abdomen when I cough.
Do you have any secrets that you're using to stay healthy? God forbid these parents keep their kids home when they're sick....
Thanks!
Re: What are you doing to prevent sickness?
I was given the okay to use Airborne. Although, I have never been someone who gets sick...more than just a runny nose and a cough here and there...I started using Airborne when I started teaching and now I am in my 4th year as a Kindergarten teacher, I don't get the flu shot, and I have never taken a sick day.
So far, I don't mind that I have to pee all the time either, because it means more opportunities to wash my hands!! When I used to only need to go to the bathroom at lunch, there were days when that was probably the only time I got to wash my hands during the school day...just too busy and since I'm not a germ-a-phobe, I just wouldn't think of it unless I had glue or marker on my hands. Now my hands are washed at least once every 90 minutes.
I haven't gotten sick yet this school year (fingers crossed!) but we have our parents bring in a few packs of baby wipes at the beginning of the year. I've been having my class wipe down their own desks twice a day. I've seen so many kids sneeze on the surfaces in the room! We wipe the desks after lunch (we eat in our room) and when packing up to go home.
Students also get themselves a small squirt of hand sanitizer as they enter the room after recesses, which is kind of standard practice at our school. I've had a lot less student illness since starting this, too.
I teach 2nd grade and my hands are drying out because I wash them (or sanitize them) so often. I bought the goldbond moisturizer/sanitizer and that helps with that problem.
I also have the children wipe all surfaces at least once a day. They don't mind and it can't hurt. I did get the flu shot, never did before DS but don't wanna risk actually getting sick. I also encourage the children to was their hands frequently and provide them with sanitizer to use while in the classroom.
Finally, I have been wearing my hair back. I found that when my hair is down, I have a tendency to touch/play with it and then my hands are near my face. When it's pulled back, my hands don't go near my face as often.
I don't have much advice other than what others have already said: wash hands a lot, drink lots of water and vitamin C.
I was sick a little over a week ago and was totally miserable until last weekend. DH let me sleep for literally almost the entire weekend and I felt sooooo much better on Monday. Still had a bit of a cough, but was able to kick most of it. I'm very grateful to him for that. He even made me food and brought it to me in bed throughout the weekend.

Ask your OB about Airborne- mine said no.
I was sad. I buy these packets of 1000 mg of Vitamin C called Emergen-C and they seem to help. You mix them in water- they taste disgusting, but if it works it's worth it!
