WHAT? No ice cream while Pregnant!?

Can someone PLEASE clarify this for me. I was just telling my husband that I would love to walk down to this new gelato place tonight after dinner. His reaction "What!?" He then proceded to tell me that pregnant women can't eat certain types of ice cream. He claims that his friend's wife had to go to a special place every time she wanted ice cream while she was pregnant because there was something unsafe about the regular stuff from a regular ice cream shop.

Somebody please, please, please tell me those people are wrong. It's going ot be hard enough going nine months without beer or wine. Don't deprive me of ice cream too.

  • I haven't heard anything, but I hope not! We were planning on going out for ice cream this evening........

  • I have never heard that. My SIL craved chocolate chip cookie dough blizzards from dairy queen during her whole 1st tri! She had them like everyday haha. I'm sure ice cream is fine. Maybe she had to have a certain kind because of a health concern of hers. Like diabetes while pregnant?
  • I ate a Butterfinger Blizzard from DQ or a Butterfinger McFlurry at least once a week, usually twice at the end of my pregnancy with DD and she is perfect.

  • I've never heard this before either! Maybe she just wanted that kind? Bring on Cold Stone tonight though and I can't wait! :)

  • The only thing I've heard is no soft-serve...and I'm not sure how much validity is in that, either (something about listeria living in the machine).

  • Say what?  Did these people smoke crack??  Fro-yo is obviously healthier for you calorie wise but regular ice cream isn't going to kill you.

I have heard this, too, but I would eat soft serve from some place like Dairy Queen. Some random buffet place, eh, maybe that's a little sketchy.

But gelato sounds awesome! Enjoy =)

  • I have heard that it is something about the listeria and/or bacteria that is found in yogurts.  I am having Rocky Road tonight and I am sure baby and I will love it!
  • I just had some delicious ice cream tonight!  I think it's fine- none of my books say anything about that.

This is what I heard too.  It has to do with the cleaning of the machine.  Does Gelato come out of a soft serve machine that has to be cleaned a certain way?

  • Most ice cream has egg yolk in it, which is why some women stay away from it...

  • Where do people come up with this stuff??  This is such an alarmist nation when it comes to pregnancy.  Drives me BSC.

  • Maybe that wife had an egg allergy. I do, so I have to avoid certain types of ice cream and scour the ingredients lists before I eat it or I break out.
  • I forgot to mention that the Brewer Diet for pregnancy actually encourages you to eat ice cream or other dairy once per day throughout pregnancy.
  • What?  I've never heard this and I do believe I will continue to pretend I didn't.  DQ Brownie Batter Blizzards and Blue Bell cookies and Cream.... yuuuummmm.

  • you arent supposed to eat ice cream from a machine due it being not cleaned very often. Soft Serve ice cream i believe its called...

again...eating soft serve isnt like smoking crack, its just recommended that you do not eat it due to Listeria...

  • Good questions!!  I googled to see if it is true or not. Surprised to find pregnant women should stear clear of soft serve ice cream because of Listeria (same bacteria you can get from lunch meat). So, I guess just have hard scooped ice cream instead. This is the website I found the information:
