Reflux or spit up ?

Hi ladies,

I'm slowly loosing it ... problem:  both boys have spit up issues and have it bad, every feeding is horrendous where more of the formula goes on them rather than inside them.  I feel SO bad for them as it's got to be very uncomfortable for them.  They'll even spit up 1-2 hrs AFTER their feedings.  Is this normal?  I'm starting to think this is much more than just spit up issues.  I burp them after every ounce now, hoping it would help some. it doesn't.  Spoke to my pedi about it last week, she had us switch from Similac sensitive to Enfamil A.R. It's still not helping much either.  I'm at my wits end as I have no idea what to do.  DS1 had no issues like this, but then again he weighed 9.5lbs when he was born.  Does weight have anything do do with this or is it just bad luck?  Any ideas to help these little guys keep their food in would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Re: Reflux or spit up ?

  • So, I hardly ever post on here, and it's actually the first time I've checked this board in a looooong time, but I fiugred I'd start here! Are they in pain from spitting up?  One of my little guys really started spitting up a ton when he was around the same age as yours. I took him to the dr and all that, and all they kept telling me was he was a "happy" spitter. Turned out he was diagnosed with Pyloric stenosis. He never was upset after spitting up, so it wasn't like it was a reflux issue, and it progressively got worse and worse over a few days. If any of that is like what your boys have going on, take them in and demand they check them out for that. I'm so glad I finally went to the er with my little guy. Trust your mommy gut...it's usually right: )

  • Are you using powered formula or ready-to-feed? For us, switching from Enfamil Enfacare power to Similac Neosure liquid and adding zantac made a world of difference.

And good luck! It can be SO overwhelming when they're spitters, but it will get better. ((HUGS))

  • Yikes - sounds like us!

H was always the worse spitter, but A had his share too.  We switched them to Similac sensitive and it did NOTHING!!!  Then my pedi said we had to diagnose whether the issue is the food coming back up that's causing pain or going down (both will arch their backs during feedings and H will sometimes throw a fit).  He put them on Mylanta - 1/2 tsp, once or twice a day.

Now A barely ever spits up anymore (I don't count the dribbles) and can go 2 oz without being burped.  H will only spit up if we don't religiously burp  him every oz.  Also, we found that H can't have RTF, he can only drink the powder (no idea why).

It's a lot of trial and error, but I'm going to talk to my pedi next week about putting H on a stronger med.  Oh yeah, the Mylanta gives them the worst smelling poop EVER.  But I'll take that over the projectile spit any day.

  • Oh and yes, they do spit up 1-2 hours after their feedings.  They would be sleeping and the stuff would come out of their noses and then they would cry and cry.

  • My smaller twin had reflux and it started at about 7 weeks (1 month ajusted). She would just cry and cry through her feedings and arch her back really bad. Then once we got the feeding in her she would spit up half of it. It was more like throwing up than spitting up because it would be all over half the couch or bed, it was so much of her feeding. We started to get concerned because she is the one that lost so much weight after birth and really needed to gain the most. At their 8 week appt. the pedi put her on Zantax 2x a day. She said the arching the back is the classic sign of reflux in a baby. Once we had her on Zantac for about 3 days things got like 90% better. She still spit up occassionally, but it ws so minimal.
