worried about supply...what else can i do?

I have been back at work for 3 weeks now.  I pump after DS eats in the morning but before I leave for work (6:30) then again 3 times at work (9:30, 12:30, 3:30).  My DH picks the baby up from daycare since it's on his way and I nurse the rest of the time we are together.  I started seeing my supply go down so I made lactation cookies and started taking more milk plus.  Both seemed to help but the last couple of days my supply has gone back down.  Any suggestions?

I have heard some women say to do a power pumping session.  I can't at work because I don't have much time but I may try on the weekend.  What exactly is it though?  I have a business trip in a couple of weeks and need to make sure I have enough in the freezer for the 3 days I will be gone.

Oh, and I am on WW and have lost 3.4 pounds over the last two weeks.  I am trying not to lose the weight too quickly because I know that can affect my supply.

  • By the last couple of days, do you mean the end of the week? My supply always starts to dip around Wed - Fri. Mon/Tue it's boosted after nursing on the weekends.

Drink lots of water (at least 100 oz/day); do breast massage before puming and breast compressions while pumping, also I can hand express 1/2 oz sometimes when turning the pump off; eating fruits and veggies helps me, I also pump 1x/day in the  morning on the weekends to give a boost and get extra milk for the week.

3.4 pds in 2 weeks doesn't seem too much to me but when I did WW I ate over my points and nursing points and still lost weight.

  • It has gotten less as the week goes on.  I hadn't thought about it being so high at the beginning of the week because I nursed all weekend.  I try to pump at least once over the weekend but I need to be better about doing it both Saturday and Sunday morning.  I will have to look up the breast massage and compressions to make sure I do them correctly.  Thanks for the tips!

  • My supply also drops by the end of the week but it will go back up next week. I also nurse exclusively when I am home (also because DD doesn't take bottles well, but that's another story!).

I second the suggestion on drinking TONS of water, and I always snack around my pumping sessions. I also heard that oatmeal helps boost your supply, maybe try that. When my milk wasn't coming in yet, I would pump and then continue to pump for a few min after the last few drops of milk, to encourage more production. And I know that really helped.

Power pumping is when you pump for 10 mins, then off for 10, then another 10, and so on. I have never done it, but considered doing it when my milk wasn't coming in yet. Stress can also cause your milk supply to drop, so try to relax and not think about work when you get ready to pump.

  • I started blessed thistle and fenugreek 1 pill each 3x a day and I have noticed a difference.
  • Try to relax.  put pictures in a bag of your LO.  Also, you could bring a blanket or onesie of your LO.  Keep pumping several times.  I have low supply now and it is contributed to stress and not pumping often enough.
