Any tips for giving a 4 y/o eye drops?

Gracie's got Pink Eye (caused by a sinus infection).  She HATES the drops.  But I have to give them to her 3 times a day for 5 more days.  I've been bribing her with mini marhsmallows but they're already losing their appeal.

  • Probably not the best - but it was effective....

We told him if he didn't let us do it, we'd have to go to the doctor so the doctor could do it, then he'd probably get a shot to.

In my defense, my husband started it.... lol.

  • the way I did it was have them close their eye, put it in the middle corner of the eye, and have them open, and it "drips" in.  Lot less scary than seeing the dropper coming at your open eye!  It drove my DH crazy that I did it that way "you aren't getting the whole drop in there!" but the pink eye always seems to go away!

  • When my youngest had an eye infection, the pharmacist told me a good trick. Gently grab the skin directly underneath the eye and pull outward until you form a little pocket (I practiced on myself first). Drop the drops into the pocket and have your child close their eye for a minute (if possible). That way you aren't dropping the solution right onto the eyeball but it is still going where it needs to go. Good luck!
  • I knew the nesties would know this!  Thanks girls!

  • We do sneak attacks and DH holds her hands and I do the drops.

  • DandR and Auntie are exactly right.  With peds, I always counsel the parents to just get the drops in the corner of the eye.  Even if the eyes are closed, when they open them, the drops will get to where they need to go.
