Baby Acne

Parker has the little bumps on his face so I guess it's baby acne.  What can I do to help clear it up?

Re: Baby Acne

  • I always heard not to do anything to them.

As far as his face, clean with just a wet washcloth.  When bathing, don't use a cloth that you have used soap on, just a wet cloth.  We always used two cloths when bathing Allie.  One for her body with soap, and the other we used last to wipe away any left over shampoo that may be around her hairline and to wash her face.  Also, when her skin got really chapped in the winter, we just used Aquaphor, but no lotions or anything on the face.

    Hope it clears up soon!

  • Jaxon had terrible baby acne!  Our pedi said there was nothing you could do for it...just wash well at bathtime.  We struggled with it for about the first 4 months.  We were first told it should go away by 2 months, but that wasn't the case.

  • I read somewhere to rub a little breast milk on it.

I didn't hear this until afterwards, so I never tried it.

  • Mitchell had baby acne. Our pedi said not to do anything, just plain water as others have said. It went away on it's on after a couple months...Pedi said that there's a misconception that baby's should have perfect skin but the baby acne is actually pretty par for the course and almost always goes away without treatment.
  • Charlotte has baby acne that comes and goes.  Our pedi told us that if it got bad enough, we could put 1% hydrocortisone cream on it, but we have never gotten to that point.I usually just wash her face with water, and put hypoallergenic lotion on it once or twice a week since the acne really dries her skin out.

He also said that some babies who are breastfed continue to have baby acne until the stop due to the hormones that are passed from their mother.

  • We used Aquaphor with some success but time may be the only true cure

It is the hormones from the breastmilk that causes this so I don't know why you would rub it on but who knows :-) We just wipe his face with water every morning and night and by 2 months it wasn't as bad. Now at 3 months you can just feel it, not really see it.

  • California Baby Calendula Cream worked for us (smells good too). The little container is expensive, but it goes a long way. Now that she no longer has baby acne, we still use it as a moisturizer.

  • J had bad baby acne too. We did rub BM on it! it does wonders for calming the inflammation and redness, and drying it up. It's also really good for healing little scratches he would cause to himself. It would all clear up in a matter of hrs. BM is great for so many uses!
  • Lydia had bad baby acne too but it goes away.  Just be patient.

I tried putting BM on it but it didn't do anything.  When I asked about that at the pedi he thought it was funny and had never heard of such.
