Do you know anyone that this has happened to? I may or may not be having a scheduled c-section with this baby since I ended up needing a c-section with DS and was just wondering about this. If you do have a c-section scheduled and your water breaks before, is it like a get to the hospital ASAP kind of thing? DH and I were talking about it last night and he said you have time after your water breaks which is true, yes, when you're having a vaginal delivery. I keep forgetting to ask my doc about this.
Re: Water breaking before scheduled c-section?
Someone on my local board just posted that her water broke before her scheduled c-sec. But, the baby was still delivered via c-sec b/c the baby was breech.
In general, you have 24 hours to deliver if your water breaks, I think.
Not personally, no.
Haha for me though, if my water breaks, I won't be taking my time. Even though this is my first baby and I know these things can take days...I'll probably freak out when/if that happens! Thankfully though our midwife comes to our house, so I guess there's not much to panic about..but still.
Yes, I had a friend who's water broke 4 days before her scheduled c-section. She went to the hospital and had a c-section then.
The ASAP thing is really based on the reason you are having a scheduled c-section. But I definitely wouldn't take your time.
Antepartum Nurse here: If you're water breaks and you've had a c/section before, call your doc and come to the hospital asap. When the water breaks, that can bring on labor contractions (sometimes) and with a previous c/section you're always at risk for uterine rupture since your uterus has been cut before. I don't mean to scare you, but it's better to be safe. Ladies that would like to VBAC need to have their babies closely monitored while in labor. For ladies that are planning a vaginal birth, if your water breaks, always noted the time and color of the fluid, the nurses need this info. And they should call their doctor asap too. Ladies that have a prolonged rupture of membranes (longer than 12-24 hours) have a greater chance of uterine infection so you should get to the hospital soon after than happens. The membranes is the protection of the baby from the outside world. HTH!
Yes, this happened with my first son! My original due date was November 21, 2008 and my c-section was scheduled for November 10 however, my water broke on November 7 at 3:00 a.m. as I was getting up to go to the bathroom! haha I woke up my husband, we both got dressed and drove to the hospital. I was already 6 cm dilated by the time I arrived which was only like 1/2 hour after my water broke!! The hospital called my doctor and my OB and within 2 hours Miles was born! Since it was so early they had to call in an emergency team to do the c-section. Considering the rush, everyone there was fantastic and it was a great experience.
My worry with this one is my due date is December 8 however, my c-section is currently scheduled for November 26 but I have this feeling it's going to happen earlier again! Trust me, this time I will be prepared! haha
To answer your question, yes, you will have some time however, if you have a scheduled c-section you should try to get to the hospital as quickly as you can.
You might as well just call. Why bother laboring at home if you're just going to have a C. KWIM?
FWIW, we're trying for a med free birth and last night my doc said we could stay at home until I got too uncomfortable.
