Babies: 3 - 6 Months

do you drink coffee and bf?

If so, how much?  I have a cup a day and it never has seemed to affect my LO, but he is now not sleeping well at night and I wonder if it could be starting to affect him more.

Re: do you drink coffee and bf?

  • I don't, but that's only because I always add milk or cream to my coffee and I am dairy free because of DS2.  I drank about 1 cup/day when DS1 was a baby and BFing.  It never seemed to affect him.

  • Yup, 1-2 cups from my kuerig each day, and sometimes another but decaf, have since DC was born. He seems fine to me.

  • I have a cup or 2.  He stopped sleeping well about a month ago and I cut out coffee for a while.  It wasn't the coffee...
  • I have a cup of coffee (16 oz), maybe two and a soda or two.  If you drank caffiene while PG, it should not effect your DC while BF.  I eliminated caffiene while PG w/ Alex and learned the hard way.

  • The only change I made when I was pregnant was giving up cappuccinos, but I still drank regular coffee every day.  Now I have coffee and a cappuccino 2-3 times a week. I drink 1.5 cups regular coffee in the morning, and maybe 3/4 cup in the afternoon.

Unless you're really downing the caffeine, it shouldn't be affecting him at this point.

  • I have a cup in the morning.

  • I can't tell if caffeine affects DD or not.  I drink decaf to be on the safe side.  I was making half caff coffee recently & she had issues sleeping at night.  Not sure if it was a coincidence or not.  I'll have to try again soon and see!
  • I drink 2-3 cups/day and DS sleeps fine.  (But I didn't drink a single cup while I was pregnant, so that's not why)

  • I drink a coule cups of half caff. I was drinking a couple cups of regular, but that seemed to bother him. It's unlikely that DS is just becoming sensitive to it now.

This made me laugh! About a cup or two as well. I started out drinking 1/2 caff, then went to one cup reg, then sometimes 2 cups. Hasn't seem to make a difference.

  • I drink one venti coffee from Starbucks and a few sodas a day.  It doesn't seem to bother DS at all.  I did the same with DD and it didn't bother her either.

  • I get a latte here and there and I'm pretty sure DD is in a better mood when I do. But that could also be that I am in a better mood when I do :)

  • I do not.  I haven't had caffeine in over a year.  I was told in a breastfeeding class that caffeine can stay in their little bodies for up to 48 hours.  I had already decided to to have any before I went to that class.

  • I don't drink coffee all the time, just occasionally but I do drink green tea often and I try to make sure its before 3pm. I'm sure if your drinking it so early that it isn't what is keeping baby up at night..teeth maybe?
  • i usually have a cup a day.   Same was when i was preggo.   i read somewhere the same guidelines for when you are preggo apply to when bf....to keep it less than 200 mg /day.
  • I drink coffee almost every day, but never after 3. It should be all out of his system (and yours) by bed time.
