bit of a sad update :(
went in for a scan today - I'm only measuring 5w3d and we couldn't see a heartbeat. I have to go in next week to see if anything is changed.could my dates be wrong?
could the baby have stopped growing?

Hopefully your dates are wrong. Did you chart or did you get your EDD by LMP?
Thinking of you and hoping that your dates are wrong.
I got my dates from my LMP. So I guess I could be off.
I did get a faaaaaint line positive test on Sept 19th, not sure if that makes a difference?
If you don't know when you ovulated, it could very well be that your dates are off and you ovulated late or you had late implantation. What CD was Sept 19th?
Try not to worry, there is only a few days difference and that could be anything. Stay calm and think positive. I know it's hard, but it helps ease your mind.
If it makes you feel any better, if I go by my LMP I should be 7 weeks today, but I know without a doubt I am NOT 7 weeks (I'm just using it on my ticker until I get a dating US) because I could not have gotten pregnant before Sept 7th.
So when I go to my first OB appointment on the 21st (when I should be around 9ish weeks) I know I'm only going to measure around 8ish.
It is very possible that you just O'd later in your cycle/have longer cycles than the classic 28 days.
When I had my first U/S, I should have been about 7-ish weeks and we didn't have a HB or anything. I went back two weeks later, had a HB and a growing baby.
I definitely O'ed later in my cycle, thus no baby with a HB. They adjusted my EDD by 9 days, otherwise I would be about 11wks now.
I sincerely hope the same goes for you and when you have your next U/S that you see a strong HB!

Oh Canuck, this exact thing happened to me, and I can definitely sympathize with your fear. I was a mess for the waiting week.
But a week later, I saw its beautiful heartbeat.
Wishing you the same.
(I'm now 7 weeks if it means anything, so yeah, I was 2 weeks off!)
Hoping your dates are just off! And, it's still sort of early to find a heart beat. The baby could be positioned oddly. We went for my first U/S around 7 or 8 weeks, and the doctor warned me before hand to not get too excited because sometimes it's still too early or difficult to see a heartbeat.
