Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Will only sleep on the breast

I have a friend with a 4 week old. Her baby seems to only want to sleep if it's on the breast. All. Day. Long. She said she doesn't really like the paci, so she doesn't have that option. Baby always wakes up a few minutes after she pulls her off the breast.

I think she fully understands that she is a comfort to her baby. She's not complaining about that. But I think we can all agree that it would be nice to be able to put the baby down sometimes.

My LO is 6 months old and never slept on the breast, so I can't think of what to tell her.

Thoughts? She she just try to keep her from falling asleep on the breast and then maybe she'll sleep once she's done eating?

Re: Will only sleep on the breast

  • Not sure exactly what to tell your friend but from my personal experience I had to hold my daughter every time she slept.  Every nap and every night. I tried different things to get her to sleep on her own but to no avail.  Then it seems like at right about 10 weeks she just up and grew out of it and let me put her down for naps.  And a couple days later let me put her down at night.  So 2 1/2 months of doing that was probably the toughest thing I've ever dealt with in my life she just hasn't been an easy baby.  But she's worth every single second of it.

same here, we just entered the "hold me if you want to sleep phase" I don't really have answers. If the baby is fussing your friend can try using a hair dryer as white noise while swinging baby from side to side. that sometimes works for us
