Potty Training

how long do regressions last?

Up until last weekend, DS was doing great. We spent a week at my PILs house and although he was in pull ups more than usual, he even did great there and didn't have any real accidents. But since coming back it's been going down hill. We've been lucky to get 50% of his wees on the potty. We've had some bright moments: telling me at play group and happily going to the public toilet. And two poos on teh potty. He's been constipated, but it seems like a lot of the time this week he's either not bothered about wetting himself, or he's willfully telling me but refusing to come to the potty and having an accident on himself. Yesterday he was on his hand and knees on the couch and peed on himself upside down.

I'm at a loss. I know he's capable of it. I don't think we've changed anything, apart from coming back from visiting family and H going back to work. Before we left, I was confident that he'd tell me when he needed a wee, no matter how small the amount of wee, and my problem was poos. Now it's poos and wees and I'm just frustrated. (I'm not showing that to him of course, but H and I keep talking about it, wondering what we ought to do, you konw?)

With regressions, do you just ride them out, so to speak? Do something different? Let them go back to a more secure feeling of pullups/etc?

Help.

  • I know there are exceptions, but I'm thinking because your little one is on the younger side, that's why there are regressions.  My twins were potty trained in July, 2 months  before 3 years old, and there haven't been any regressions, or many accidents.

My friends kept telling me they'll have accidents for a LONG time after, but their children were so much younger when PT (2 years old).  I think it's an age thing, and just takes more work when they're younger. My younger dd will be 2 this week, and I'm not going to even push it with her.  I think she'll be pt by 2 1/2, but I'm going to wait until she's really ready. I was so afraid of PT, but it was so easy with my twins, and I really think it was because they were older. Best of luck!
