2nd Trimester

Missfire, are you around?

Got a question for you since I think you are also seeing a midwife?

  • Hi! ;-)

I lurk on Natural Birth sometimes and I saw you're having twins, congrats!

I'm assuming you found out from an ultrasound? I ask because I was wondering if there was any indictation prior to that.

I've only had one appt. so far with my MW. I'm working with an apprentice who is being overseen by a CPM. It took her a while to find the HB and once she found it she moved on quickly.

Also, she didn't measure my fundal height for some reason although I thought I had it measured every appt. last time.

Anyway, I'm just being paranoid but did you measure big or ever notice more than one HB or what? ;-)

  • Yep, I found out at my 20-week ultrasound, and I can't think of any earlier signs!

At 18 weeks, I was measuring 18 weeks, so there was no indication beforehand. My 18-week appointment was the first one where they measured my fundal height this time - with DS, I think they started earlier, so I'm not sure why that changed. But it looks like it wouldn't have told them anything anyway.

With the doppler, we heard the heartbeat at 14 weeks and 18 weeks, but there was no echo of another baby, and she didn't search around or anything after hearing the one heartbeat.

I'm a little larger belly-wise than in my first pregnancy, but I started out about 5 pounds heavier, and most second-time moms I know feel bigger faster. I've only gained 10 pounds so far in this pregnancy.

I don't feel like my midwife team "missed" anything though. They have a LOT of experience, and I got great care with them. I declined the genetic screening, and never had any complications that warranted additional testing or ultrasounds early on, so there just were no signs.

  • That's just so funny to me! I'm probably not having an ultrasound this time (fairly common for my MW practice) so I just have this feeling in the back of my head of "what-if."

I'm 98% sure it's singleton but I guess you just never know. We really have no twins on my side but my husband is a twin (which I know doesn't really factor).

Anyway, thanks for the info.... I'm obviously putting too much thought into this ;-)

  • At some point, at least, it will be very obvious! Your midwife will feel two heads when palpating to find out the baby's position.

The advice I've gotten from the doc so far (before my full "multiples education" starts in 2 weeks) is to take an extra 1600 mcg of folic acid a day, and to eat more protein. So if you have any inkling that twins might be a concern, it might not hurt to do that now. Also, I would just ask your midwife at your next appointment to put your mind at ease and check around more with the doppler or see if she can feel more than 1 baby in there. You might feel paranoid, but I'm sure other patients ask them stranger things!
