Hi all, My daughter will be six months at the end of this month. We breast feed, but I have to supplement with about 4-6 oz of formula/per day because of low supply.?
We will be starting solids at some point. I would love, love at the some point we could do ?stop the formula and just do bm and solids. Any chance I can obtain this dream?
The back story is my milk was very slow to come in and their wasn't much of it. I had to supplement bc of weight loss/ dehydration. (which further hurt my supply) Turns out I had hypothyroidism. I've worked very hard and my supply has increased. but most days I still have to supplement. ?
Re: when do 6-12 month babies take less breast milk/formula
It is recommended that the main source of nutrition remains breast milk/formula until 1 year.
I know it is. But I've heard people say at some point (a friend said 10 months with her baby) that bm/formula intake decreases a little bit as the intake of solids increases. ?
I'm getting really depressed about having to use formula, and I'm looking for some hope that maybe I can stop one day.?
Right now I estimate she is getting about 22 oz/day breast milk and 4-6 oz/formula.?
My DD started to take noticeably less around the 9 month mark (when she started to REALLY eat solids, rather than just tasting/playing). However, my supply dropped to match. Not sure how that would work in a supplementation scenario, but it seems like it might be possible to replace the formula first as long as your DD still nurses frequently. Hopefully someone with experience on that will chime in.
I didn't notice a drop in kiddo's demand until more like 9-10 months when he started eating more solids. BM should be the main source of calories until 1.
But if you are only needing 4-6 oz of formula, I think it's possible you'd be able to drop it before then - assuming you keep up the same number of nursing/pumping sessions.
Congrats on hitting the 6 month mark!

If u want to reduce ur formula and increase BF. Try to decrease 1-2 feeding FF a day for a week and then next week reduce 2-3. Then add cereal, BF and lil bit of baby food - squash, sweet potatoes, peas - dont expect them to finish half a jar cos its new to LO. I add lil bit of pear or apple to LO cereal cos she loves them. so try a jar a week and then a new food 2 weeks after to see how LO does. LO will have preference - trust me.
Keep in mind that BM might not be as filling as FF and LO might want to take more BM. I found it draining cos every 1 hr she was hungry and I could not keep up, I had to supplement with formula and its okay.

Thanks everyone. That's more motivation to keep going! ?I already pump after every nursing session so I think I can keep my supply up?
But HOLY SMOKE, I just pumped 3.5 oz in place of a feeding. Almost a whole day care bottle. That's NEVER happened for me. Maybe things are looking up. ?
