xp: anyone experience LO that can't stop vomiting??

I also posted on 12-24 since it's a little busier there--but since he's actually on this board LOL....

He woke up totally fine---no indication he was sick.  We went out on a nice walk this morning and when we came home he threw up.  I thought--weird, but maybe just a fluke.  A little bit later (maybe 15 min) he threw up again and then again---about 5x within just a few minutes.  Then I'd try to give him something to drink and he'd instantly throw up.  Tried a popsicle and he threw that right up.

The smallest sip is making him vomit---after vomitting around 9x within an hour and a half I finally called the pedi.  They said to probably not wait much longer--if he's not having wet diapers and can't even keep a teaspoon down, he'll need to go to the ER for an IV.

He just fell asleep on the floor--that's how out of it he is right now---so I'm letting him sleep with a close eye on him. I'm praying he can keep it down when he awakes.  BUT if not--what can I expect at the ER???  Any tips for keeping liquids down??

He doesn't have a fever--so I'm guessing a tummy virus.

  • hmm - my daughter did this a few months ago - not quite so dramatic - but basically threw up every 10-15 minutes for about 2 hours.  The doctor told me that I should wait until she hadn't thrown up for about 30 minutes - 1 hour and then try very small amounts of pedialyte, water or diluted juice - wait 20 minutes then try again, etc.

She said while vomiting is scary, its not really that dangerous and I didn't need to worry much about dehydration unless it went on for like 12 hours.

they're concerned about dehydration b/c he hasn't had a wet diaper since this morning--pretty early.  Now he just woke up and was dry heaving--went back to sleep.  Ugh!

  • Take him to the ER- better safe than sorry.  We went through this exact same thing with younger DD when she was about 12 weeks old and it was awful.  She was in the hospital for 6 days because she had to have a constant IV.  No fever but couldn't keep anything down.  Finally one day it was like a switch flipped and it was just over.  I will say hers was unusually long and since your little boy is older it will probably run its course faster.  But if I were you I would take him, you don't want to mess around with dehydration.
  • This has happened to DS.  Both times, he was 100% fine after a nap.  We stayed away from dairy for 24 hours, stuck to Cheerios and toast, and gave him lots of juice.

  • I forgot to answer the part of your question about what to expect at the ER.  They'll probably have you try to give him some Pedialyte there so they can observe if/when he throws up to see how much he can keep down for how long.  Then they'll decide whether or not to administer IV fluids.  He might just need an IV for an hour or 2 to replenish his fluids and get his strength back up and then you could be on your way home.  Good luck!
