Houston Babies

i know i am being needy but...

do you ever get over being afraid of SIDS? right now I can't sleep when E sleeps because I am need to watch him to be sure he is breathing. We have the Angel care monitor but that really only works in the crib right? This is why I am scared to let him sleep in the swing or a PNP at night when no one is watching him. DH thinks I need to get over it (not in a mean way, but in a I need to relax way) but it's hard.

i know no one can tell me how to stop feeling this way but I just wonder if it will get better. I spent all of my pregnancy terrified something would go wrong and now I'm worried about this...it's hard :(

Re: i know i am being needy but...

  • Well, you could get a Respisense monitor, which clips on to his diaper. This is what I bought when it became obvious that Mathis was going to be a tummy sleeper.

It's hard, but you do get over it. 6 months is the end of the real SIDS danger zone, so if nothing else you have that as a light at the end of the tunnel.

  • I relaxed a little bit after 2 months (when the greatest threat dwindles down some) and relaxed a lot more after 6 months since there is far less of a threat. We still put DD down to sleep on her back and luckily she is either a back or side sleeper. This morning though when I brought her in the bed with me at 6 am she rolled over and slept until 9 on her tummy. I kept checking her but she was fine.

Once they are able to lift their heads and roll over, the threat is greatly reduced since they can prevent suffocating a little better.

As a first time mom, everything I read or heard about freaked me out ands scared me. Still does. I still worry about something happening to her. We're moms, it doesn't go away. My mom still worries about me and I'm over 30 with a baby of my own...it really doesn't go away.

  • I was never worried when ds was sleeping in the swing.   However, the 1st year of his life, if we went out of town...the Angel Care Monitor came with us and we put it under the pack n play mat.   DH was just as paranoid as me.  :)

We still use the Angel Care in the crib...and ds is 2.......

So I guess I'm truly no help.

  • I thought I would be worried especially since both kids were near term babies.  But when Emmy was waking up literally every hour through the night for the first 2 months...I wasn't exactly watching her when my brain needed sleep.  It was that one night when she was aruond 3 or 4 months that I woke up around 4 or 5am all freaked out and checked to see if she was breathing because she didn't cry one time that night.

Same with Ally, she rarely sleeps through the night.  But when I get those random nights that she does (which is rare), I do wake up and check up on her.

  • I was terrified of SIDS.  We have an Angelcare monitor in his room, and when he would be asleep in the swing or bouncer, I'd lay on the couch right next to him in hopes that I could hear him breathing.  It got better as he got older.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

  • thanks everyone. he slept in his swing lst night in our room and i actually slept so I guess I am relaxing  a little bit more. I did have to get up a few times and check that he was breathing. day by day and moment by moment, i guess :)

  • what everyone else is saying... also add in that your hormones are crazy... I know it made my paranoia worse!

    hugs!

  • I have an Anglecare and a Snuza.

The Snuza is similar to the Respisense mentioned above.  I love the Snuza.  It is easy for when he is in the swing, the car, or when someone babysits.  I couldn't live without it.  I'm so bad that at night he sleeps with the Snuza and the Anglecare.  DH thinks I'm crazy, but it helps me sleep.

  • DS is almost 3 and I still fear he will die in his sleep. Like, seriously. If he sleeps in past 7am, I start sweating and internally BEGGING to hear him wake up. It is irrational, I know, but I think it is just part of being a Mom.
