Irrational Reaction to stupidity- Long vent!!!

So I live where I work and occaisonally work men need to go into my house. Last week when the HVAC guys were here I told them if you need to go into any of the houses let someone know we all have dogs and we can lock them up.

So today I get a call from our facilities manager that the tech needs to get into the house but is scared of the dogs. So I leave my office and head down there.  I go in and lock up both of my dogs and tell the tech he can go in.  I said "they wouldn't  hurt you, Monte just freaks out a little when you knock on the glass door."

He said "Well at least you know he bites! I didn't knock I just walked in and he bit me on my pant leg."  I was astonished for one my dog has never bit anyone and 2 WHO JUST WALKS IN TO SOMEONES HOUSE!!!!!

He then said " I will let my legal representative take care of it" I laughed and he said, "You think I am kidding but I am not." Dead serious.

I said "if I had known you needed to get in I would have locked them up." He blamed it on the company that he works for not giving him a number that they can call.   He has been here a number of times before, has gone to the office to get keys in the past and therefore knows how to let someone know.
I left called the facilities manager who is calling his boss but I keep crying my eyes out over the whole thing! (Pregnancy I am sure) I am so upset and shaky about it!

I am just so pissed- YOU walked into MY house and got bit on the PANT LEG and you are going to threathen to SUE me?????

Yea- I need this kind of crap in my life right now!

  • That is ridiculous. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, and I hope it works out in your favor.

  • Wow!!  So you didn't give him permission to enter the house without notifying you??  I'm not a lawyer, but it seems like if he wanted to sue you for a dog bite you could retaliate with some sort of trespassing charge.

  • Yah I wouldn't worry about it. The liability would be on your employer anyway not you personally.

  • wow, so sorry you have to deal with this. When DH and I were working on our house we called the township office to ask to make an appointment to have them inspect our addition. Instead of calling back to set up an appointment he just showed up. the door was locked but the bolt was a little broken and so he pushed the door really hard (broke the trim that kept the door closed) and let himself in. I had left to get something to eat when he came and the only way I knew he was in my house was by the destruction he left in his wake (knocked stuff over, broke the door, muddy footprints, etc). I couldn't help but think "what if I had just gotten out of the shower and had been naked?". I called the office and told them my problem and all they said was that "they always go right onto a property when inspecting". UUGH really!? even when someone lives there!?

I would put a sign on the door that says "beware of dog, get permission before entering" . It is a shame it has to come to that. Anyway, Even if he did sue, you would win. Your dogs were doing their job and protecting their home and the people in it.

  • Yeah I don't think you're being irrational, who the eff walks into a house without knocking first??

  • You're not being irrational.  You and your dogs did nothing wrong.  He entered without permission.

I have a simmilar story.  When I was growing up I had a Malamute (we think, we adopted him).  His name was Joe and he was huge, but looked really freindly.  We never had an issue with him until we got a call from the cable company.  Apparently one of their men had tried to go into our back yard.  We didn't know he was scheduled to do anything in the backyard that day, and our dogs were outside while everyone was at school/work.  He said that when he started talking to Joe as he approached the fence, Joe was wagging his tail and acting like he wanted to play.  When the guy reached over the fence to open the gate, Joe bit him hard enough that be broke the skin on his arm through a jean jacket.  He apparently never groweled.  He reported it to his boss, and then his boss fired him because he didn't do things in the right order.  He acted stupidly.

THEN, after we heard about this, we decided to keep the dogs primarily inside during the day just in case.  My mom was talking to the next door neighbor about it soon after it happened, and the neighbor said "Oh yeah, several people that have been at my house have been bitten the same way.  I think there's been three or four people that have reached over the fence to pet him because he looks so friendly and playful, and then he just bites them."  WHAT???  Why wouldn't you tell us that?? And also, why wouldn't you warn everyone that's ever in your back yard not to reach over the fence after the first time it happened!!!  The neighbors obviously weren't upset about it, but it had been going on for quite a while without our knowledge...

Other than those few incidents, he was an amazing dog and I miss him so much...

  • That guys an idiot.

I've been watching a lot of people's court lately and they have dog biting law suts all the time on there and I don't think this guy has a "leg" to stand on.

(sorry for my lame joke ;)

Seriously though, he walked into your house without giving you proper notice so you could lock up the dogs.  The dogs had a right to be there...he did not.
