A trip to the ER and Prednisone & Clomid

Good morning ladies, sorry this is kinda long.

So I'm not sure anyone will even be able to help me with this, but I'm just going to throw it out there for advice.

I had a really bad allergic reaction to something yesterday and eventually ended up in the ER having to take a bunch of antihistamines and Prednisone.  I'm supposed to stay on the Prednisone for 3 additional days to make sure this reaction - whatever it is - doesn't come back.  Essentially, I would be on the Prednisone CD3-CD7 and the Clomid CD5-CD9.  I talked to my RE to see if I can start with my Clomid cycle while being on prednisone for a few days.  They told me I can but being on the prednisone and the fact that I had this allergic reaction decreases the chance that this cycle will work for us.  They only advise against it because they want the cycles to be as optimal as possible and this one won't be.  It won't cause harm if we do get pregnant though.

So I'm torn.  Part of me thinks we just go ahead with the Clomid b/c this was going to be our "if it happens, great" cycle and November is our game on cycle.  DH might actually be out of town when I ovulate so timing may not even work this month.  It would be nice to have a month of ovulation before the November cycle, even if we don't get KU.   But another part of me just thinks, "stay on the pill, don't worry about it" this cycle.

Any thoughts/advice?  I just can't make up my mind and DH has left the decision up to me.  I don't think he cares either way.

  • I'm sorry, I don't have any advice.  I just wanted to say that I hope you feel better soon!

    Good luck with this decision.

  • It's a tough decision.

Does your doc limit clomid cycles?  Even so, I would probably still do it.  I wouldn't think that the Prednisone would make that much of a difference especially that early in the cycle.  I am an incurable optimist though (for other people, not for me!)  GL!

  • I thought that you could only take 6 cycles of Clomid.  If you think that the allergic reaction with put you out this cycle, I wouldn't waste a cycle.  That is just me though.

  • Thanks for the well wishes, ladies.  It was kinda a scary experience and what freaks me out even more is that I have no idea what caused it.

Our doctor does limit the clomid cycles, but not to 6.  He will let us keep going on the Clomid even if we get to cycle 6.  We plan to IUI and Clomid next cycle if this cycle is a bust.  So maybe, if anything, its worth trying naturally.  Man, I have about 11 hours to choose.

This.  Especially if you think DH might be out of town during O.  Clomid can thin your lining over time, so if you don't think you have a good chance to get KU this cycle, I would skip it.  Good luck!

  • Some women actually are put on prednisone during their cycles in order to help them get pregnant so I don't see there being any issues there.  I would definitely go ahead with your cycle.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

. That is interesting. Thanks for that advice!
  • I'd probably go for it, but I hate "wasting" months.

  • So sorry for your scary experience.

Why dont you go off the pill and try without med this cycle. You are still giving yourself a chance, and not wasting a cycle with Clomid that may not be ideal anyway. Just another though.....
