Evan is starting to get on his elbows and knees when we put him to bed, so we are preparing for him to start crawling at some point. This got me thinking. When did you lower the crib matress? We still have him on the highest setting since he can't go from a laying to seated position by himself.
Also, when did you start baby proofing your house and what all did you do? We are planning to do the kitchen cabinets, outlets, and ensure there aren't any cords where he can hurt himself. Other than that we are not planning on padding every corner or hard suface in the house. Did I overlook something obvious?

Re: Lowering the crib matress and baby proofing?
we lowered it when she pulled up for the first time (thankfully, it was during the day when I was putting her there to fold clothes and not in the middle of the night!)
And as far as baby proofing, all we've ever done is cover electrical outlets.

We had to lower the mattress when I laid him down for a nap then he persisted to pull himself up to his knees. Only then because I was affraid he'd fall out head first the side of the crib hit him just below his chest. Cohen still hasn't learned to pull up to stand on his own so we only lowered it once.
As far as baby proofing we only really did outlets too because everything else is put up enough he cant get to. I did this as soon as he started crawling on all fours.
We lowered it once he started pulling up on the crib. We also only do the outlet covers.
I don't remember when we lowered the mattress but probably around the time we knew that he could pull up to his knees. Luckily at 1 1/2 he barely ever stands in his crib.
As far as baby proofing we basically just did outlet covers. We did remove things from the coffee table that he would just pull off.

Oh-oh....ok, second time mom here and it hasn't even occurred to me to lower the crib now that she's crawling and standing up
. For some reason in my twisted mind I was thinking that we had more time and she isn't near ready to climb out yet...oops. I am so glad you brought is up.
I guess I was more obsessed about things with the first kid (as one sometimes should be) and now I guess almost too laid back.
LOL, I think we will be that way too if we have another baby. We were so worried at the beginning that we have eased up a bunch. DH asked the other night if we still needed the baby monitor on since he knows E may cry at some point but will put himself back to sleep. Uh - no DH, E isn't quite ready for that. Men.

gates for stairs, if applicable
move pet dishes or block off as needed
I think we lowered once he was pulling up on things. I don't even think we moved it to the middle notch - just went from highest to lowest.
We only did outlet covers. We have a few cabinet locks (the outside ones) for the cleaners, but otherwise, don't have them. Since we both work, our time with DS is limited, therefore, he is usually in our sight when we are at home. If I was a SAHM, I would feel inclined to babyproof more, since he might be playing on his own more (I can see on weekends that he walks around on his own a lot).
Cooper started pulling up really early, well before he crawled. We lowered the mattress then. He started crawling between 6 and 7 months and pulling up on everything around the house so we started baby proofing then. So far we have done outlet covers, cabinet locks in the kitchen (I mostly just keep him out of the bathrooms for now), I tied lamp cords to the table legs so he couldn't pull the lamps down on his head, and we had to get into the habit of not leaving things we didn't want swallowed or destroyed on the coffee table/end tables.
I pick up and put back down the animals' dishes about 70,000 times a day---usually I am snatching it up just as he gets to it.
Soon we will be bolting some furniture to the wall because he's showing an interest in climbing and I don't want him pulling book shelves over on himself. I'll probably also put cabinet locks in the bathrooms and do more baby proofing as he shows me what he can get into. My kid is a big time busy-body and gets into everything. LOL
Good points. I forgot about the bathroom cabinets and items on the coffee table. We also need to bolt his cubbies to the wall in his room.
