thrush question...

So, DD and I have thrush...oh joy.  Not sure how you get it, but we're both on meds now to get rid of it.  What I'm curious about is when can I start pumping and saving it?  When is it no longer in my milk? It's so hard to pump and dump!

I'm on an antibiotic for 10 days.  Does it mean I have to wait that long or longer?  Thanks gals!

Re: thrush question...

  • Do you mean you're on an antifungal medication?  Thrush is a fungus, it's yeast.  It naturally occurs in your body but can get out of control when your body doesn't have enough of the good bacteria that keeps it in check.  Thrush frequently occurs after a round of antibiotics, or like my FIL after a round of radiation that killed off all the good bacteria, or like me for no apparent reason, just because you're lucky.  ;)

Generally they say not to save milk that you pump while undergoing treatment, so yes, to be safe wait until you're all done with the meds.  You can feed her the milk you pump, just don't freeze it and give it to her later as you can reintroduce the high levels of yeast.

Taking acidophilus or eating yogurt will help, you can also give acidophilus to LO.

  • Hmmmm...yea, they put me on Dicloxacillin...it's an antibiotic.

Yea, I wasn't on anything and neither was she so I guess we're just lucky like you. I'll give your other suggestion a go too.  Thank you!

  • I also had thrush, it sucks.  I was put on Nystatin and was allergic to that stuff.  I then used an athletes foot cream and apple cider vinegar mixed with water. LO was on Nystatin that did nothing for hers, so Pedi put her on Diflucan, wiped that stuff right out.  I put that stuff (ACV) on my nipples after I nursed and rubbed it off before.  I had to pump during this time because I was going out of town.  I did not dump because I also needed my stash for going back to work.  I also read where you can have thush for months.  We had it for a little over a month.  So far we are thrush free.  I also boiled LOs pacifers every day and just cleaned my pump parts and bottles with hot water and soap.  I also read where feeding LO the milk with thrush may make it come back, so I just labeled all my milk that I pumped during thrush time.  So if I do see it again, I will toss at that time.

Being on Antibiotics is what causes it, because it wipes out your good bacteria.  Good Luck, it totally is a pain in the butt.

Antibiotics and anti-fungals are not the same thing.  You may want to talk to your doctor some more.  Being on an antibiotic could make it worse.
