OK.. This is disgusting and I am embarassed but I was bitten by chiggers about 2 weeks ago... I have about 24 bites and each bite has 1-3 chiggers in them.. I am itching like CRAZY..
I have gotten hot oatmeal baths, used alcohol, witchazel, & cortisone cream... NONE of this is working.. I even tried to pick them out with a needle.. but they are just so hard to see.. and I was bleeding @ that point...
I have been crying for 2 days b/c I can't even find out what to do online.. everything they say, I've already done. I have NO health insurance to go to the doctor.....
I am miserable. And I need help.
Does anyone know what to do? =(
Re: Not baby related..HELP!
Get nailpolish. Put the nailpolish directly over the bites. Leave it on for a few hours/a day.
It suffocates them and kills them.
My brother just recently had chiggers because he goes hunting in the woods. Don't be embarrassed. There's nothing you could have done. Good luck!!
Colored nail polish?? Then after the few hours, what? Take it off w/ nail polish remover? Or soap? And repeat for days....
Do the chiggers come out on their own once dead?
"Many home remedies for chigger bites are based upon the incorrect belief that chiggers burrow into and remain in the skin. Nail polish, alcohol, and bleach have been applied to the bites to attempt to "suffocate" or kill the chiggers. But because the chiggers are not present in the skin, these methods are not effective.
Treatment for chigger bites is directed toward relieving the itching and inflammation. Calamine lotion and corticosteroid creams may be used to control itching. Oral antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), may also be used for symptom relief."
WebMD
I grew up in the country, and played in the woods. I've never had chiggers myself, but everyone in my family has and we have used this method since we were kids, and since my parents were kids, and their parents were kids. Choose to do what you like. Does WebMD have better suggestions?
I suppose I don't understand why you're asking for advice and then arguing the advice. Couldn't you have just looked at WebMD to begin with?
ETA: Chiggers are in the same family as lice and ticks. Though it's possible that you were only bitten and there are not chigger in your skin, they still have the ability to get into your skin. If your symptoms are really bad, I would suggest going to the doctor to get a prescription anti-itch cream. Maybe they would be stronger?
Not arguing the advice. As I said in my original post, I have been searching the internet for weeks.. and doing what they say and nothing is working.. I hadn't tried this method b/c of what WebMD states....and I was asking for advice & appreciate the advice.. I am not saying that I won't try it, ***, I'll try anything at this point... I was clearly just showing you what it states.. but who knows if it's right...
If you have been around ppl that have it... and it works.. I'll try it. I wasn't trying to be a snob.. I'm just desperate for things that WORK. since nothing has...You don't understand, I have them all over my legs. I am 100& miserbale.......and I had read this in the past, so when you said it, I was thinking "Sh!t, I already read that it doesn't work"
Thank you.
To all of you awesome ladies with these responses.. thank you!
I just got out of the shower and put clear nail polish and all the bites.. hopefully this works.. Screw webMD!
I apologize for getting defensive. It's been that kind of morning.
I feel so bad for you! Itching is one of the most AWFUL things! If it is that bad, and you've tried suggestions, I would go to the doctor. There HAS TO BE something that they can't do beyond what you've tried. Otherwise, you are literally going to go insane.
