Daycare and bottle question (nipple size)

My son is 12 weeks and this is his 3rd week in daycare.   He has been doing a great job going from bottle feeding back to nursing and I don't want to do anything to mess that up.

Today at drop-off, the main teacher asked me about using stage 2 nipples because it is taking him 45 minutes to drink a 4.5oz bottle.  The other teacher then said something about needing to "feed the other babies", so it seems like they are just wanting to rush his feeding.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I don't want to mess up nursing because his daycare thinks he is taking too long to eat.  I am just not sure how to approach this with his teacher.

Could he possibly need smaller bottles?  Comfort sucking?

I will add that he has never taken that long to take a bottle from DH.  He watched him for my first 2 weeks back at work and LO would polish off a bottle in 10-15 minutes.

Re: Daycare and bottle question (nipple size)

  • I think slow flow newborn nipples are always suggested for nursing babies. A stronger quicker flow makes the bottle easier to drink from and they can grow to prefer it over the breast. I would maybe explain that and if they can't deal find another daycare.
