Is this some kind of unwritten rule?

So last year, on DD's first christmas, my sister bought her christmas dress. That was fine because she was only a few weeks old and I definitely had no energy or time to go dress shopping for her.

Well now, I was just talking to my grandmother and she says "I bought Lucy a few outfits. One is a dress, but I don't expect her to wear it for Christmas or anything - I'll leave your mother or sister to get that. But, she can wear it for her birthday."

What? Why does my family get to pick out all of her outfits for all of the holidays? (I already have a 24 month dress hanging in her closet for next Easter, bought by my mother too).

    I made it very clear early on that I would be selecting all special outfits.  My Mom still tried to sneak in and get her a Halloween costume.  I told her to back off - nicely of course.

    My Mom constantly tries to buy LO's holiday outfits.  I've explained that I get to buy them but she is more then welcome to buy her a dress/outfit  that she can wear on another day.  There is no way she is buying their outfits - I look forward to it way to much.

    My MIL always buys her a bib that says "my first (fill in the blank)." I don't mind that. I think I'd be irritated if family always tried to buy her special occasion outfits, that's one of the fun parts of being the mommy!

    My family and ILs have bought all of DD's special occasion dresses and Halloween costumes so far, so maybe it is some kind of unwritten rule that new moms don't know about :) I've liked everything so it hasn't been an issue for us, but if it's something that you want to do then they should understand -- you are the mom, after all!

    my MIL does this too...thankfully she has good taste so i dont mind....but at first i was a bit put off by it
