Guys - I need some collective wisdom please.....
I was not sure if I was happy with our OT. I requested an eval, and they are saying he is doing great, but they are not working on fine motor, sensory stuff - just go with the flow, engage him and run around if he wants to. Paid out of pocket. I was there during all the sessions. The place is awesome with a ton of equipment and very very sterile. Never a wait, everyone knows my name type of thing.
But now I have MEDICAID!!!!! I am so happy!
I got a new eval at a new place that only takes Medicaid. We had to wait for 45 minutes to see our eval person in a room with about 40 people (adults and kids). The OT gym is very 'bare bones' and not super clean (a big deal because DS puts everything in his mouth and is not vaccinated). They did a good job testing him on standardized tests, and identified the same areas that I had in mind for future work. But they do not know who will be assigned to him and I may not be able to participate in the session.
I am so torn. What do I do? What is best for my son?
Please help!!!!
Re: OT - please do not flame me
I'd say it's all about the people. Your previous gym might have been state-of-the-art but what's the use, if you weren't particularly happy with how the sessions went. I think I remember you mentioning it here before that you didn't think they were doing anything constructive. Like there was no plan really.
I have to say that I had the experience of one state of the art OT gym and the regular LAUSD provided one. While the first one was still very good and there was so much equipment to choose from, I absolutely LOVED the school based therapist at the second gym. While the school gym is still good, it isn't bare at all, the great experience has been definitely more about how the therapist has related to and cared about my son's progress.
So, I'd say give it a try. I agree about the cleanliness, I'm still freaked about people not taking their shoes off at home or stomping their feet in dirty shoes on the rug at school where the children then sit all day long, but these are things you can always gently bring up to the therapist. I'd bring my own santizier, if they don't have one there, and give it to her while mentioning your concerns (his mouthing, no vaccines...etc).
You can always re-evaluate the situation in a month or so.
