Buying for LO for winter holidays?

I keep waffling back and forth about how much we should actually be buying for LO for Christmas. I realize that they will be almost (or alteast) a month old at this point and wont have any idea, but I feel kind of bad knowing that we will be spending as much as we will on DS and barely anything on the baby.

With DS, he was due on Christmas day (ended up being a day late) so we only got him a few small things in case he was here on time.

What are your buying plans when it comes to LO?

  • it is VERY hard to resist all of the adorable first Christmas stuff, but I'm due Dec 21 and that's cutting it too close for me to buy a lot even though chances are good he'll be here by then.  luckily for me I had a friend who had a baby boy last December and she gave me a ton of hand me down adorable Christmas things in newborn size.  I hope I get to use them!!

  • I bought one first Christmas outfit and plan to buy a few books for the baby's nursery/library.  I plan to buy a few books for my neice to be born in Nov as well.  Nothing else really.

I'm a pretty big proponent of the whole, "they don't know what they're getting for birthdays/Christmases for the first couple of years" and the whole "other people will buy plenty of toys for the baby" way of thinking, so hopefully I'll be able to resist all the cutesy stuff and leave that for the aunties and grandmas to buy and stick to more practical stuff.

  • <--horrible mother. I didn't even think of buying him a gift since he's due on the 20th. I mean, we'll be buying him lots of stuff - I've already got some outfits and such, but I didn't think of a particular Christmas gift. I know my family has already picked Christmas gifts out for him, though.

  • I plan on making some keepsakes for our baby's first Christmas.

I've embroidered a Christmas onesie and I want to make a Christmas ornament with the date on it and a stocking. Not sure what I'll put in it though.

  • My EDD is 12/26 and I am hoping to have her before Christmas Day. That said, I am probably going to pick up a few small toys like rattles and things like that to wrap up. Mostly just because DS will be 2 and in case he wonders where the baby's Christmas gifts are. DS was 4 weeks old at Christmas 2008 and we didn't buy him anything that year. It just wasn't necessary.

  • I'm making him a stocking and will put some small things in that (if it's done in time ;) otherwise we've been buying things for this little guy for months now, it's like Christmas in July, August, September....

  • I am due on the 6th, so she will no doubt be here by Christmas. I'm all about doing a stocking/ gifts for baby, but they will probably be necessity items vs. cutesie stuff or toys.
  • honestly, I haven't even thought abou this! I'm due on the 6th, so she'll definately be here by Christmas. I'm spending so much on her right now as it is, that I don't really know if I will do something, maybe something little.

  • LO is due on the 6th, so he'll be here by Xmas. But I don't think we'll buy anything for him.

DH and I don't even buy presents for each other. We just set a small limit (usually less than $50 each) and stuff each others stockings. So I'll probably get a cute little stocking for LO and fill it with his orniment for the tree or something like that. Probably a "baby's first xmas one".

My mom used to get each kid an orniment every year and I thought the tradition was neat. So DH and I have done that for ourselves as well. Each year we get a new orniment for the tree and try to write the year on it somewhere. We either get one around Xmas time that we like or pick one up during the year if we go on vacation or something like that.

  • I'm not buying a lot. I'm due Christmas Day, but we will possibly be delivering a week early. She will only be about a week old, so I know she will have no idea. I'm just doing it for memories for me and for her scrapbook. I'm buying toys in the 6-12 month range since a lot of people will probably be getting 0-6 month things. I figured it would be best to get the 6-12 month range because there's no holidays or birthdays in between this Christmas and next for her to get toys.

  • I am due to the 5th so she will be here in time for Christmas.  Even before the situation with my DH happened, we were thinking about getting her a few things to put under the tree/in her stocking.  Now, for sure we she will be receiving some gifts to have Daddy to help her open.

I'm due on Christmas, so we'll do a stocking and maybe one small gift just in case baby arrives on time, but only because our first DD will be 2 and will probably ask where the gifts for baby are.
