Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When do you go to the hospital?

DD has had a cold since this past weekend and she got a fever last night. It's higher now and I was wondering at what temperature do you take a baby to the hospital? I asked the receptionist at the pedi's office when I left a message for the dr, but she said 105. I know that's not right, and the pedi is taking his own sweet time calling me back. Help, please. TIA.

  • DS was sick this weekend and our pedi's office also said 105. I was really shocked at this because it seemed really high to me. :(

  • Are you sure they didn't mean 100.5? DS got a bad cold last month and had a fever of 102. The on-call nurse (it was a Friday night) told us to take him to the ER. By then he was down to 100.8 and we were told that was still too high for him, and they had to run a lot of tests. They told us the cut-off for all the tests was 100.4. He was 2 months at the time.

  • Have you given her anything to bring it down or tried a luke warm (never cold!) bath?  What is her temperature right now?

I told her that it was 101.7 last time I took it and asked when I should take her to the hospital and she said "It's usually not until 105". I was just stunned and thought that was too high. I called DH and told him and he said 106 is deadly for a grownup, 105 is not safe at all for an infant.

I gave her some Little Fevers  about an hour ago and just checked it and it's down to 100 even.

  • Our pedi also says 105.

DD had a fever of 103.4 once and the pedi just told me to give her tylenol and call if it got over 105.  It was a rough night, but the fever started breaking by morning.

Is it possible that she has an ear infection.  Everytime DD ran a fever, she ended up having an ear infection.

  • Infants and children actually run higher fevers than adults. With an infant you don't need to trreat a fever until it reaches 101. I would agree with your pediatrician that at 105 you should take them to the ER. It sounds high, but that is because we are used to temp in an adult, which is not the same for a child

when my little one was 12 weeks, she spiked a 101.2 fever and we were told to go to the ER for the sole reason that it was over 101 and she was under three months. if she was over 3 months, they would have said give some tylenol and see if it goes down within a certain amount of time.

honestly, unless she's dehydrated or having difficulty breathing, i don't see why you'd have to bring her in with a 101.7 degree fever.

ETA: by " bring her in", i mean to the ER. i would think your doctor would want you to bring her in for an office visit, though.

No, it's not an ear infection. I'm hoping it's just a cold and nothing worse. Along with the fever, she has dirrhea, a really stuffy nose, bloody snot, will only eat 3 oz at a time, sleeps all the time, and a bad cough. I mainly don't want her to get dehydrated. I'm giving her Pedialyte, but she won't drink much.

  • I was told a high fever doesn't affect babies and toddlers the same way it would an adult. My daughter did have a 105 fever and we though she must feel freezing (like we would) the doctor said it isn't the same, we ended up overheating her. We did take her to the ER b/c she couldn't even keep the ibuprofen down so she had to have suppositories and they monitored her until the fever came down and for dehydration. The baby had a 101 fever last night and while I wanted to freak out, I gave her tylenol and she was fine this morning.

I agree with this but would add that an infant younger than 3 months old needs to be evaluated for a high fever.  When DS1 was a little over 3 months old, he spiked a fever of 104 (RSV) and our pedi said he was on the borderline for age and told us to take him to the nearby pediatric walk-in clinic the next day (it was a weekend) unless the fever went higher. If he had been younger, she was clear that he would have needed to go to the ER immediately.

105 actually is a fairly standard threshold in terms of emergency care for infants/children older than 3 months.

  • That sounds right for your DD's age and our pedi said the same thing at DS' last check-up.  It's only when they're really little that you need to go straight to the hospital for any fever over 100.5.

Wow. I was just going to say that 105 is VERY VERY VERY bad for an adult, let alone a baby.

DS has never been sick *knock on wood*, but after his vaccines they send you home with a paper that if his temp is 101 or above to take him to the ER.

Same for ds. Fever= ear infection.

If one of mine had a fever like that I'd call the pedi and ask for a sick appt--- they will get us in within 1-2 hours.
