I seem to change my mind daily on which spelling I like better. I know many women of varying ages with these names and spellings.
Here is what I like about each one:
Katherine - very common spelling in the US, this would probably be the way most would spell the name if for example, taking a phone message.
Kathryn - some people pronounce the name with 3 syllables instead of 2. I hate the 3 syllable pronunciation, so this spelling would encourage people to say it the more lazy Southern way that I prefer.
Catherine - there is just something about the C that makes this spelling classic.
So, as you can see, I like all of them for different reasons. Is there anything wrong with any of the spellings or do you think it is just personal preference?

We're used to Katherine and Kathryn now, but it was just the 70s version of kreativ spelling. Catherine is the classic spelling.

If you want the two-syllable pronunciation, spell it Kathryn.
Spelling it Katherine/Catherine and then asking for it to be pronounced with only two-syllables is just encouraging lazy English and poor reading skills--please, please don't do that. Americans don't need any more help bastardizing enunciation.

Our DD is Katherine.
We spelled it this way mostly because it is the most common/classic spelling in the US. Our last name requires us to spell it every.single.time. so I didn't want to strap her with having to say Catherine with a "C" or Kathryn with a "y" on top of our last name.
We also prefered the "K" spelling because we wanted her to go by Kate. I don't particularly like the look of Cate... and I hate the nn Cathy which is much more easily derived from Catherine.
Eh.... I would agree that Catherine was more common than Katherine in the early part of the 20th Century. I would NOT agree it is the "70s version of kreativ spelling". Katherine (spelled with a K) has been in the top 100 baby names according to the Social Security Administration for at least the past 100 years. And Katherine was also more popular between 1900 and 1910 than it was in the 1970s. So I'm not sure where you got this idea from.
Agreed. Katherine is not a "kreativ" spelling. Isn't Katherine the original Greek spelling? Catherine is just the French/English variant.
I really dislike Kathryn. I don't think the three-syllable (more like two and a half) pronunciation will ever be THAT much of a problem. The random Y and chopped off E just looks silly.
I like both Catherine and Katherine. I think the spellings are used equally, but I could be wrong. I prefer Kate spelled with a K, but Cate Blanchett makes the C spelling tolerable. If you're going to call her by her full name, Catherine is my choice. If you're going to use Kate or Katie, I'd go Katherine.
I like Catherine best. Also really like the nickname Cate. The C makes the name a little more sophisticated IMO.
I also like Kathryn for the reason you listed, it's also my great grandmother's name.

According to the SSN website, Catherine was more popular than Katherine until 1973. I looked back until 1890. So I'm not sure where you got the idea about 1900 (Catherine was ranked 34 and Katherine 65) and 1910 (Catherine was ranked 22 and Katherine was ranked 57).
I wasn't comparing Catherine to Katherine. I was comparing Katherine's ranking in early 1900s to Katherine's ranking the the 1970s. Clear as mud?
