3rd Trimester

induction re:not being delivered by own Dr

Here's the deal - at my 39 week appt yesterday, I was 3cm with a soft/favorable cervix and my Doctor wants to induce me tomorrow simply because she always takes the weekends off. The next induction slot would be next thursday, but my edd is 10.11.10 and she is doubtful  i will make it until then (this being my 3rd and all, etc etc). So, would you go for the induction tomorrow or take your chances with a strange Doctor? Would you care?

Re: induction re:not being delivered by own Dr

  • I would not be induced if it was just for your Dr preference.  When I deliver I will have whoever is on-call, which most likely will not be my Dr.  It's actually uncommon around here to have your Dr unless it's a scheduled C/S or induction - while I would prefer my Dr it's just one of those things that I'll have to live with and knew from the start.

  • Being induced simply because the doctor wants the weekend off is ridiculous! You still have 5 days until your due date, let the baby come when he/she is ready!
  • I would wait and take the chance with a strange doctor. Honestly when my oldest was born my OB was out of town, and it didnt make any difference to me who was helping my aslong as they new what they were doing. My OB came in and checked on us the next day. This time around I am usning a MW and there are 3 that rotate the oncall schedule so chances are that my MW wont be on call the day I go into labor either. But its a personal choice whatever you feel compfterable with.
  • I would do it, I have heard tons of induction horror stories, and tons of successfull ones. I haven't heard of any that didn't go well when they were already as progressed as you. I think that you should do whatever will give you the most stress free labor, if that is with your own doctor, go with it, if not then dont worry about it. I think that you being relaxed and comfortable during birth is going to be what is best for your baby whether that be with or without artificial hormones involved.

     This!

  • WIth DD I had to get induced with a different doctor, as my doctor was on vacation for 2 weeks & I had developed pre-e.  In the days prior to my induction I had 3 different doctors (my regular doctor, his backup & then his backup).  All 3 were gone the weekend  I was induced, so then I had the on-call doctor (who I hope will be the one doing the c/s this time around...very good).  So I had LOTS of doctors!!!
  • Being induced just because your doctor is going to be out of town is crazy. You arent 40 weeks yet.. let your baby cook...
  • She likes to take the weekend off? My doctor is on call no matter what the day of the week.
  • No, I wouldn't do it. You're not even at your due date yet.

It's your third baby so you're probably a pro at it at this point!

  • Take your chances, induction is not worth having your doctor there for the birth.

Lucky doctor to get to take weekends off! Mine scheduled my induction for the 10th (a sunday) and he said he'd be there for it!

     Eek.

That totally sucks that your doctor is forcing you into a corner like that. If it were me, I wouldn't mind delivering with another doc, but that's because I'm not in love with my OB to begin with. Good luck with whatever you choose!

How is she being forced into a corner?  She can either be induced now and be guaranteed her doctor, or wait for things to happen on their own and use whatever doctor happens to be on-call.  Her choice, right?

OP, I would totally do it. You're over 39 weeks along.  But I'm biased - I had a happy, successful, medically necessary induction with my first baby and am electing to be induced at 39 weeks with this one because I'm sick of being pregnant and uncomfortable.

  • Do what feels right to you.  I go to a group of midwives so i meet all 5 of the potential delivery assistants :)   Are there other Dr's in the same practice?  If you can I would ask to meet them and then wait for your body to do its own thing.  Unless you are anxious to deliver!  LOL
  • Hmm, maybe your OB should not have gone into that specialty if she expects weekends off.

I would not induce just because of her preferences, especially if you have not passed your due date.

  • I am sitting here praying to not have to be induced...and you are thinking hey why not at least I'll get the Dr I want.  No thank you!

  • Yeah - not doing it. It's not like we'll be socializing or anything during this process - lol. Nor do I particularly care. I just thought it was odd that she offered this option and was actually nudging me towards it and my sisters were like 'go for it and get it over with'. And yeah, the other 2 Doctors in the practice are off too this weekend - go figure.

    tx all for your input.
