2nd Trimester

Baby Name board going to give me a complex

So I posted a clicky poll on the Bn board because my DH and I keep going back on forth on the spelling of the girl name we picked.

We really like Aubrey (Aubree/Aubrie) for a girl....one reply told me it is a boys name and the other told me I was thinking of the name Audrey...I know it used to (like A LONG TIME AGO) a boys name but it switched to mainly a girl's name by the turn of the 1900s.

Am I crazy or am I going to call my girl by a boys name???

Of course, it won't matter if it turns out to be a boy, but now I am second guessing myself!!

  • I like that name!  Cute for a girl...

  • I take what the BN boards says with a grain of salt.  Aubrey is fully a girls name now imo.  I'm not usually a fan of boy names on girls, but this one doesn't seem to even ring boy anymore.

  • I think of it as a girls name. All Aubrey's I know are girls.
  • I love that name. Maybe most of them have complexes?

  • I love the name Aubrey! Spelt either way you have it up there! Everyone has an opionion, but the only one that matters is yours and DH!  :)
  • Sorry...Aubrey sounds more like a girl's name.  I'm shocked by their responses, Aubrey for a girl's name is nothing new.
  • Aubrey is definately a girl's name. If they are going to think in terms of THAT old fashioned for name rules I guess they are all considering Ashley a boys name too. Confused

  • I've only met one Aubrey in my life and it was a girl.  I guess I never thought of it as a boy name.  Don't worry about it!

Absolutely.  Some of the post opinionated people over there have the worst taste in baby names, IMO.  I'll see them slam other people and then I'll later see them post their favorite names and, Ick!, I can't believe they ever had the gall to criticize others.

  • I don't think Aubrey has been used commonly as a boy's name in ages. I didn't even know it had been a boy's name until my coworker (who named his daughter Aubrey) mentioned it. If I met a boy named that I'd find it a little odd.

You my friend are not the crazy one. The crazy ones are the ones that are on the names board 24-7 telling people names are spelled wrong, or aren't a girl name or boy name.

You have to pick a name that fits your family's style, your and hubby's likes, and just go with it.

Just because they have a OCD problem with spellings of names doesn't me they are right.

I like the name Aubrey no matter how it is spelled.

Good Luck and just my advice, choose the name with your husband not some internet people you don't know.

  • Thanks ladies!

Even if it was a boys name and I had somehow missed it I think I would still go for it because I love the name!

I was just really thrown off by some of the comments over there and wanted to see if I was the only one thinking that way!

  • Don't listen to them!! I love that name, its cute!

Also, they told me that Xavi would be a horrible name for my son (I'd be explaining it for a lifetime and that its too "weird")... you can see by my name badge in my siggy what I thought of their advice! Wink

  • I don't like that board. They were very critical the last time I posted my names.

The only Aubrey's I have ever met were girls.

  • I'm obsessed with the name board... but to be honest I hate most the names they people on there like.

I had a similar reaction when I posted that I like the name Robin.  They said it was a boy's name.  Robin hasn't been a boys name in quite a long time!!  Aubrey is girls name!  It's in the same category as Ashley.  Yes... once a boy's name now a girls name.

  • I would never use this name for a boy in this day and age.  It sounds very girly to me, and I vote for the Aubrey spelling.

ETA: I think the baby names board can go to hel!.  Obviously.  Since i am using what is probably the #1 most hated name on that board.

  • Just like any other board on the Bump, if you don't want honest opinions, it's best not to ask. The good thing is that you love the name enough not to care if others like it or not.

I do like the name Aubrey (spelled this way!), and I think it's fine for a girl.

The only Aubrey I know personally is a guy in his 20s.

I chose other.  Here's my explanation...

AuBrey is a boy's name, IMO.

I like AuDrey for a girl.

Glad I'm not the only one that doesn't like Aubrey for a girl.

I do not like it for a girl or a boy, but especially not for a girl.

well i guess it is a good thing that I didn't ask for their opinions on the name....just the spelling! Really, was that necessary?

  • I think of Aubrey as a name for either, but nowadays more of a girl. I will say that I think Aubrey is the best spelling of the three you listed BY FAR.

Unfortunately, when you post something that asks opinions, it's very difficult to dictate exactly which aspects people can offer opinions on.

Not everyone will love your kid's name.  As long as you do, and you're not doing something seriously socially awful (you're not), you're in good shape.

Oh I know...I am just being cranky and sensitive...lol  Seriously, these hormones take over sometimes and I feel like I am being personally attacked for what I want to name my child!

I have calmed down now and returned to a sane person.

I know the feeling.  I get super irked when people dump on the name we picked, even though I know the correct answer is "screw you guys, we like it."

  • Aubree is a girls name for sure. I know a few Aubrey's actually.

You're not crazy. Go with what U and DH like.

I have a girl we named Dallys (Dallas) after my Dad - she's 12 & loves it.

  • i definitely think of aubrey as a girl's name...

that being said, i haven't asked anyone's opinions on names for our baby because i don't want to hear negative feedback on what we like... inevitably whether it's on the baby names board or a friend/family...there will be someone who doesn't like the spelling or doesn't like the name or what have you and won't hold back in telling you their feelings!

  • I like Aubrey and it totally screams girl to me.  We are going with Addison if we have a girl and back in the 1900s, it was a boy's name...as was Madison and Allison.  But they have made the transition to girl's name now.  Don't let them get to you.  Now, if you were naming your daughter Monkey or something then yea, that would be a problem.  lol
