Post-baby back pain from Epi

It's the morning after our 2nd prenatal class and my birth plan of "give me the drugs, 3 pushes, done!" has been crushed...the first part of it anyway.  Our instructor, told us last night that sooo many mom's who have come to see her with back pain (she is/was a massage therapist or something as well) has been caused by scar tissue from the epidural spot!  She says to the client, have you had a kid - yes...did you have an epidural - yes. bingo!   seriously? WTF! I have never heard that there could be long term side effects of the epi just from the point of entry.

I'm worried now because I was all for having an epidural if/when I felt I needed it, but now I'm worried about pain down the road.  Have any of you mom's who had an epi had/have back pain post baby?

Re: Post-baby back pain from Epi

  • I've never heard of that either. Are of these clients coming from the same hospital because I'd be more concerned with the one hospital then epidurals in general. I have several friends who got an epi with no problems afterwards.

  • I have had two now.  I don't have any lingering back pain from it.    I agree with PP.  I would check around with other people from that hospital.
Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)
  • I have a close friend who's lower back is still tender (her baby was born in March of this year).  She said they told her it may last the whole first year or so.

  • i actually did have back pain after my epi- it was like having a sore back from time to time.

the pain wasn't constant- but common after sitting for long periods.

    it went away though.

  • I've heard about this from many women; epis do carry risks although few people talk about them.  My back is already completely jacked from an accident so there's no way I'm risking further damage with an epi.

  • There was a post about this just the other day and I think that there were some 2nd time moms who had lingering back pain at the epidural site from their first pregnancies.

Same with me, that's my last resort pain relief option. I'm scared if I need a C-section and what they'll do.

  • I have it from time to time. Feels like the mildest form of back labor and doesn't last long at all - less than a minute. And I will still be getting an epidural for birth number 3.
  • I had an epi, and haven't had any back pain or any other negative side effects from it. I also have several friends who had the epi, and they didn't have any problems either. Definitely do your research though! I know I always like to have all the facts before I make a decision.

  • Thanks for all your feedback!  Definitely something I will look into further before making the decision.  The last thing I want is lingering back pain when I already have pain as it is. lol
  • I had a large bruise from the epi that was sore for a few weeks, but I have not had any lingering back pain from the epi and plan to get one again.
