2nd Trimester

What old wives have you been told?

I've been told that I'm carrying a boy but ended up pregnant with a girl the first time around. Then there was the Chinese gender chart which predicted a boy both pregnancies and the first was definitely a girl. The nurse in the OBGYN office told me that what ever my youngest child predicted is probably correct and my mom just informed me that bcz the hb on the Doppler today was 140 it has to be a boy. Hmm... anyone else hear some whoopers?

Re: What old wives have you been told?

  • Just after telling a co-worker that I was having a girl she said "No. You've had heartburn, you're going to have a boy with lots of hair."

  • I heard something about how the heartbeat sounds...it will be a boy or girl depending on if the heartbeat on the doppler sounds like a train or a horse galloping. But I doubt that nonsense is real :P

  • I was told that if I lift my arms over my head during the 3rd tri, the umbilical cord will wrap around the babies neck.

  • My mom has told me every OWT out there!!!! Some of the worst are that my cats are going to suffocate my sleeping baby and that if you let a baby "stand" too early, they'll be bow-legged. She also insisted that what you eat changes your milk and therefore the baby's gas and poop. But who knows; she might be correct on that one.
  • That I should drink beer when I breastfeed (I don't even normally drink alcohol ever) because it produces more milk.

I was told this also when pregnant with DD, I said bull shiiit, guess what...  born with cord around her neck 4 days in hospital, LOTS of fun let me tell you.  I had horrible heart burn with her and she was born with a head full of hair which I was also told would happen. lol

  • My grandmother, in combination with the ladies in the kitchen at the restaurant I worked at, all insisted I should stop reaching for things on top shelves (even though I was one of the only people that could reach without standing on something) just because of the cord around the neck thing.

I've also been told that I must be having a girl this time around because my boobs are massive and I've been extra hormonally emotional... way more than I was with my son.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.
  • my favorite happened yesterday... my sisters boyfriend told me I was having a girl... I asked why he thought this... His answer was cause your getting fat everywhere and very fat on your face... I was like kid (he's only 18) I will kill you for one and also it is NEVER okay to tell ANY woman they are getting fat... I really wouldnt tell this to a pregnant woman... Oh and the heartbeat one and the heartburn one...
  • Oh I heard the opposite, the more....er.... physically intamite you want to be means that you're having a boy. The extra testoserone making you horny lol.

What you eat does affect your milk, its taste and how the baby reacts to it. It helps babybe ready for table food b/c he's used to the favours of the house.

The hops in beer is known to help your milk let down, I don't think you produce more. Up until a couple years ago they used to keeep beer on the mat ward in some Atlantic Canada provinces.

  • I've been told that if I go to the zoo while I'm pregnant, my baby will come out with a cow-like face...  Oh the joys of impressionable young minds hearing these crazy things from their parents/grandparents and bringing them to me at school

  • This is sort of true.  I read it in my Breastfeeding book.  It says if you drink 1 I repeat 1 beer a day it will increase milk supply.
