Postpartum Depression

does counseling help?

I've been on medication since DS was born in June, but I just feel that I need more.

I'm wondering if pursuing counseling is worth it.

TIA

Re: does counseling help?

  • Counseling can be a big help. A place to open up and the things you may be hesitant to put into words can be spoken, sometimes I start talking and in the process finally put into words something that has been in the back of my mind keeping me down that I didn't even realize was back there. Counseling can also allow you the chance to learn techniques to help with break through symptoms. It is very worth it imo.

    this.

Plus, it really helps when my doctor breaks things that I'm thinking down for me - like, "okay, that's a normal mom thought" or "that's the PPD talking."  She's really helped me separate the PPD & intrusive thoughts from myself.

All of this! I brought M with me a few times so my counselor could see how I react when she does certain things. I think it helped allot

  • It does help and I've been glad I've been seeing one. He has helped me connect some dots that i wouldn't have realized; and is trying to help me get back to me. Its also nice to have someone to talk to that is not involvd in your everyday life...
  • Definitely helps.  Most issues like PPD are best attacked with a combination of drug and behavioral/cognitive therapy.  I recommend finding a therapist in your area that specializes in PPD.  My therapist has really helped me feel a lot better.  It was just nice for someone to validate what I was feeling and to tell me that I wasn't crazy - I had a real illness that needed treatment.
