Ducks are for girls?

MIL calls me to tell me we have a baby gift at her house. It was something from her friend she jus dropped off. I guess it was just in the bag from the store and she took upon herself to open it. Anyway... she tells me it has ducks on it and since ducks are for girls she will just take it back ,and pick something else out for DS! I happen to love ducks and I also think they are gender neutral. Just because I am having a boy , it does not mean he is only wearing blue .

vent over...

  • What a weirdo.

Why is she looking in your stuff?

Bc she is super nosey and overbearing. I told her to leave it alone and I would get it later.

  • I would kindly ask her to keep it because you want it. There is no reason she should take it upon herself to return something because SHE thinks she should. We had a lot of ducky things for DS and DH is the one who picked most of them out!

  • Where is the clause that says we have to associate with our families? Sometimes I'd like to just ignore them for a year.
  • Id tell her that I love ducks and they are neutral and to respect my privacy and not open stuff that is for me. I hate my MIL though...

I know right. My MIL is the my way is best and I know everything about everything. I am just thankful that we live 4 hours away from her.

  • No way. DS took a huge liking to ducks at an extremely young age (I'm talking before 1 year), & 3 years later he still loves them. His entire bathroom is ducky decor, & it is not girly at all. There are blue ducks, green ducks, yellow ducks, halloween ducks, etc. etc. So I think ducks are very gender neutral.

  • That would piss me off royally!!  I love ducks too (especially the duck stuff from Carter's, super cute!).  It's your  decision not hers.

She knows I love ducks . My bathroom is done in them . SHE just thinks they are for girls , and like a said to PP she thinks she is the all knowing.

The stuff from Carter's is super cute. I even bought DS a duck bath robe today at Kohls. I was not happy that she inserts her opinion into everything.

  • My answer to that...

"I like ducks for boys or girls.  Please don't return it!  BTW, why would you be opening my present?  I'd rather you not do that if another gift comes to you.  DH and I like to open them together."  end.of.discussion.

  • #1. Ducks are adorable and gender neutral.

#2. I'd be pissed if someone opened a gift that was not for them, then went ahead and told me what it was....then thought they were being "helpful" by returning it for something THEY liked better.

Sorry, your MIL sounds crazy. I saw a yellow rubber ducky outfit at BRU and it was sooo cute I wanted to buy it in every size. haha.

She is a bit crazy. She thinks boys should only wear blue or sports theme stuff. I love yellow , green and blue for boy or girl. We also got this cute little sleep sacks and she tells me looks like a dress!! UMMMM really ....

  • That is the kind of asinine comment my MIL would make. I disagree with it. I have 2 cute little gowns for newborns and they both have little ducks sewn at the top. I find them adorable on little boys and girls alike. So there!

  • Wow- that is incredibly rude and intrusive of her to open your gift and then decide that it needs to be returned.  It sounds like she just wants to pick something out and then get credit for the gift.  I would definitely tell her that you want to see it before any decisions are made to return it.  And that it's a decision for you and your husband to make together.  If she wants to pick out something for your son, she should be doing it on her own.

And besides, I agree that ducks are totally gender neutral.

  • She's nuts! We're having a girl and do have a lot of duck stuff, but that's because we're Duck fans. We met at the University of Oregon. Ducks are most certainly for boys tooo!

    Go Ducks!!

  • One thing that you could say to convince her to not return it immediately at very least if she has that sort of attitude is that you would like to thank the appropriate person and you feel you can't adequately thank them for the gift if you never even saw it.

But I kind of have to admit that she sounds crazy. I was planning on getting ducks in the bathroom (especially a rubber duck) before I knew the gender. Plus has she never seen Burt or Ernie or heard the song that one of them sang about a rubber duck?

We are getting LOTS of Carter's ducky stuff for DS. They are totally gender neutral. And she shouldn't peek. WTF.

I agree with this. You have to care pretty strongly to want to immediately go return it without even passing the gift on to the real recipient! Sounds like maybe she has something against the gifter and wants to one up her and return her gift for something she thinks is better.  Sounds like the MIL off everybody loves raymond.
