Those with kids w/ ear tubes...

How many ear infections in what period of time did your child have before deciding to see an ENT for tubes?  How many rounds of antibiotics did your child get and in what time frame?

Ally just finished her 3rd round (in a 5 month time frame) of antibiotics last week and for some reason, I still think she has pressure on her ears (fluid) but not infected anymore.  I just know with the winter time coming up, she'll probably get more.  But I kind of want to know what is too much and when to seek an ENT?  I really don't want to go the tube route if I don't have too, but I don't want to give her too much antibiotic the first year or two of life either.

  • We had 2 in about a month and on the 3rd one that developed within a week of ending antibiotics for the previous one, I took her to the ENT.  However, we already had a relationship with him, so I had no issues just going to see him.  He said based on the pattern, it would only continue so we went ahead with the tubes... She hasn't had an ear infection since.  He removed her adenoids at the same time and I'm quite certain that the combination is what "saved" us from cold/ear infection hell.  (She would get an ear infection every time she got a cold before the tubes, but the last 3 that close together are what sealed the deal for me for her to get tubes.)

  • Bella had at least 5-6 in a 6 month span. We had tubes put in her ears October of last year and it was the best thing we could have done.  She only got 1 ear infection once she had tubes (and it was very easy to treat!).  Even now that her tubes are out of her ears, colds don't affect her like they used to.
  • Abbie had about 5-6 infections before she was 5 months old and her pedi told me to go to an ENT.  They wanted to wait for her to be a year old before doing tubes but then she got 2 more ear infections so they went ahead and put tubes in when she was 7 months.  I'm SO glad we did.  Her infections stopped and her weight went up from 15th%tile to about 30th.  The antibiotics made her tummy icky so I'm glad we got to stop them!  1 of her tubes fell out when she was about 2 and the other one fell out of the canal but not the ear so they went in with a little tool and got it - no biggie.  She has only had 2 ear infections since and she's 6 years old.

  • Our first had a series of infections and reactions to antibiotics. That made tubes the best option.

Our second never had an infection, but had painful fluid and hearing loss. We did tubes pretty quickly after that. We didn't see the need to go through more painful infections this time.

    Good luck!
