Floor lamps- avoid in nursery?

I don't have a light in the ceiling, so I need lamps to light up the nursery.  I have a couple table lamps, but could really use a floor lamp in the corner (that is connected to the on/off light switch in the room.)  Then it hit me, is it safe to have a floor lamp in a little kid's room? I just have this image of LO in a year or so walking over and pulling at it/knocking it down etc.   Did you guys do floor lamps or avoid them for safety reasons?

I know this is a potentially ridiculous post.  ;)

Re: Floor lamps- avoid in nursery?

  • I have floor lamps in both girls' rooms because of the same issue. What is it with no overhead lighting! Anyway, DD1 is 2 1/2 and it has never really been a problem. She was interested in it at first, but after a few times of telling her that it was off limits she left it alone. We also have them all over the house so they are either old news to her or she just got tired of being told no. I think it's fine.

  • Thanks, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't committing a big NO NO.  :)  I will move forward and get a floor lamp!
  • I plan on getting a floor lamp and a table lamp.  I never thought about safety issues, but we have another floor lamp downstairs too, so LO will just have to learn no lamps!

  • I was thinking of a floor lamp to put next to my glider.  I do have an overhead light, but thought I might want a softer light near the glider in case I am ever doing any reading while nursing, etc.  I guess if it becomes an issue when LO gets older, I'll move it?

  • we have a touch floor lamp that has 3 levels of lighting so thought about using that in the room for the middle of the night changes/feedings. room does have an overhead light too but its bright so thought this would be easier for the first 6+ months or so.

  • What about a light that would mount on the wall? IKEA has some cute, inexpensive ones.  I would be a little paranoid about the floor lamp myself but I'm sure there are ways you could try to secure it if needed.

  • If you're worried about it, they do make lamps that plug in to an outlet, but attach to the wall, so there would be no base to knock over.

This was just the first one that came up on google...

  • We have one in there for now - I think it will help out with middle of the night diaper changes. I think the timing of when we stop needing it + when he gets mobile & curious will work out quite nicely :)
