Houston Babies

gas/colic

So E has been up pretty much all night for the last 3 nights (so all 3 nights we have been home). He will ~12 hrs during the day, waking up to eat and when he is changed but pretty much going back to sleep. Then once we feed him at night he is up, alternating between sleeping 10 mins at a time and screaming at the tops of his lungs.

Last night he was up from 1230 until 5 am, ate and then was up crying until 1130 am.

I'm pretty sure it is gas cause he has been gassy and burping a lot. He is also pulling his knees to his tummy quite a bit.

Question is: what can I do about this? Anything? He's only 5 days old

Re: gas/colic

  • It sounds like E probably has his days and nights mixed up moreso than gas or colic, especially since you've said he has no trouble sleeping during the day.  Gas doesn't just strike at night, and colic usually doesn't set in quite this early.

I know I've read things about how to help get their days and nights straightened back out, but other than trying to keep them in/around bright light during the day (even when sleeping) and keeping it nice and dim/dark at night, I can't remember what any of the other "suggestions" are off the top of my head.

  • that's what i thought at first but does that happen this early? i'm such a dunce about all of this!

i'll google to see what other suggestions are out there :) thanks!

  • Oh yes, lots of babies have their days and nights mixed up from the start (that's the most common time).  Some of the logic for this is because it's what they were used to in utero.  When you were up and awake during the day, all the movement lulled them to sleep.  Then, when you would go to bed at night, the baby would get more active because you weren't rocking them to sleep!

  • Do we have the same child? O does this every night .. well she stopped for a while about 4 days then started again. I'm blaming a growth spurt on her doing it again. We think its a combination of alot of things. Since she doesn't cry she groans and moans my pedi thinks it can be gas for her. She said gas can definitely be worse at night because its accumulating throughout the day and babies can be fussier at night. We are using mylicon, probiotics, and gripe water (colic calm) hoping it helps her a little bit.

On keeping her up during the day what we did was got her naked (in only a diaper) and fed her that way and talked to her after she ate. This kept her up but now she doesn't really nap during the day at all and still has horrible nights. Awesome for us =)

  • you can give gas drop with every bottle.  If you're feeding formula, think about changing to a sensitive (lactose free) to help with the gas and fussiness. You can also do some baby yoga moves where you move their legs in circles.  People swear by gripe water too.  Also..there's a little pouch call happy tummy that you warm up for 30 secs and put on their stomach. Honestly..known of this totally helped me.  the only thing that helped was time and them getting older.  I believe it got better around 8 weeks.

  • Ditto LisaK and Kelly.  There are a lot of things you can try, mostly though it's just that he's tiny.  It will get better with time.  Cooper screamed from 12 to 4am every night for the first week or so.  I thought he hated me.  Seriously.  He was fine all day and all evening, then DH would go to bed and the screaming would start.  He had his days and nights somewhat backward and he had bad gas but none of the "tricks" really helped, it just takes time.  It will get better, hang in there!
