Breastfeeding

Conceived while BF?

Have any of you conceived while BF??

My DD is 6 months and I am not on BC.  My husband and I actually wouldn't mind if we got pregnant again so soon so we see no reason to have to pain for BC monthly.

I strictly breastfeed and am feeding 4x per day and still haven't started my monthly cycle at all.  A week or two ago I noticed a little crampiness and thought, uh oh my AF is coming now :(  But it never did.  The past three nights I have had to get up to go pee. (which that and bloating were my first signs of pregnancy with DD, however i have no bloating now)

I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative but I do know when I was pregnant with DD I took a test the day before my missed period cuz I knew something was different and it barely showed up pregnant.. I had to go outside to even see that second line and my husband swore he never saw it. So I dunno if it could be possible and I tested too early?? Or if I am just paranoid??

Re: Conceived while BF?

  • My cousin had Irish twins, because she wasn't taking birth control and breastfed.  MANY people have told me, from their own experience or that of a close relative, that it is a myth that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding.  Plus, my lactation consultant agreed with this.

  • I did - but I didn't ovulate until I night weaned at 15 months.

4x a day at 6 months is not much at all - are you feeding pumped milk or formula as well?  Nursing that infrequently is unlikely to keep AF/ovulation away for much longer.

  • I am proof that BF is NOT a form a birth control AT ALL! I actually had fertility issues before conceiving my LO and DH and I thought that we would just go with it if it were to happen for us between now and next year when we would have started "trying" again so we didnt do bc and we found out 3 weeks ago that we are pregnant. So even for those who couldn't do it on our own the first time - it can happen very easily the second time.  We are having Irish Twins.  I started to feel crampiness a while back and thought AF was coming - but then I started getting extremely tired and all the early pregnancy systems came rushing back.  I waited 2 weeks from when I suspected to test and sure enough the test didn't even get wet all the way and there were two bright lines. It can happen....
  • I know that night weaning will cause AF to come sooner.. and my baby has been sleeping through the  night since 7-8 weeks.  She is nursing 4x a day adn also getting solids 3x but no extra milk/formula.  My MD says she is growing fine and has been in 25%tile since birth.

Sometimes I question too if she is getting enough (just as an unexperienced mom) but she is content throughout the day and sleeps through the night and continues to have enough wet/dirty diapers, so my lactation nurse and MD says she is doing great!

  • I was conceived while my mom was still breastfeeding mny older sister.  We're 17 months apart.  It can happen...
  • I got AF early on, at 4 months while EBF (and my son ate ALOT!).  I got pregnant when my son was 9 months and nursing 4-5x/day.  He's still nursing 3-4x/day now and I'm 20 weeks along.  I thank god all the time that I'm fertile- I have too many friends that struggle with it.  Definitely suprised though!
