Tween Halloween Costumes-Whats appropriate?

So this year, as I have done in the past, I'm purchasing my little sisters Halloween costumes. She is 12 years old this year, and wears a b-cup bra. Last year she was a devil, the year before tinker bell. This year she sent me THIS costume link through email because its what she wants to be this year. Its out-of-stock online but not in the store. I'm not so sure about this costume. I feel it may be too old for her, but my opinion may be biased because I cant get passed that she doesn't still want to be a Disney princess. Does the costume seem appropriate for a 12 year old?

Re: Tween Halloween Costumes-Whats appropriate?

  • I don't see a problem with it, as long as she wears tights/leggings or something underneath.

I'd just make sure she tries it on first to make sure everything is covered.

  • No, not at all appropraiate for a tween, or even a teenager.  Whatever happened to little girls dressing like little girls and teens not trying to look like they're 25.  Sad, so sad.
  • It's too bad the skirt goes out so much.  That much fabric going down would look much more reassuring.

I might be crazy- but my thought is it's a bit inappropriate for a 12 year old.

My daughter might not end up being one of the cool kids once I'm through with her!

  • Uh No, not in my opinion at least. I wish my parents had pulled the reins in on me a lot more when I was a tween/teen and it came to my wardrobe. And Halloween was always the worst of it. It's just unnecessary to dress immodestly, regardless of age. And especially for a younger girl, who is still impressionable, and doesn't fully understand the world around her.
  • Twelve is so much older than it was ten years ago. Do you have any sense of what her friends will be wearing? Is she going to stand out as extra-seductive, or is this the norm? That skirt seems awfully short--maybe some leggings?
  • as long as she is wearing leggings under it I don't see a problem with it.

     This.

  • I don't think it is a bad as it could be. As long as the top is not low cut , I can't really tell from the picture.

Like PP said that if she wears tights it would not be that bad. IMO

  • i think it's fine with leggings/tights under it. the top doesn't appear to be low cut from the picture. i actually think it looks like a young costume. you wouldn't have caught me dead in this going to a halloween party when i was in my college and beyond going out phase. (and i wasn't one to wear "sexy" costumes or dress up like a catholic school girl or any of that crap-- i just think this costume has a juvenile look to it.)

I have no idea what her friends are wearing. We take her and her choice of 2 friends trick or treating each year along with dh's little brother, and the last 2 years her friends have just been things like *kid* witches, and angels and some haven't even dressed up to go trick or treating.

  • I think it would be OK with leggings. Tights would still be too sheer for my liking.  Of course if it were my sister or daughter, I would much prefer that she wear a homemade ghost costume. Made of a thick sheet. With a sweatsuit underneath.  My poor child.

  • There's no F-ing way my daughters will wear anything like that until they are over 18 (because then, it may be sort of out of my control) - even then, I will warn them to be careful about where they go in such "attire."  All clothes like that do is attract the wrong kind of attention from the VERY wrong sort of people

  • This doesn't seem at all inappropriate to me. I think this is norm for most 12 year olds nowadays, if not even modest in comparison with some things I've seen. I wouldn't even force the tights issue unless the fabric of the skirt turns out to be very poofy in person. And if she really doesn't want to wear the tights, do you think they are going to stay on anyway? Just a thought...

  • I personally think it's inappropriate and I'm not an up-tight kind of person.  For a 16 year old, yeah...12, no.  Leggings underneath or not, it's sending out the wrong message.

I actually find the varying opinions on this really interesting.  I'm almost wondering if it's regional or something.  Because I'm pretty moderate...I don't believe in little girls dressing like they're 20 at all.  And the costume doesn't really seem to send a "message."  But I guess around here it's pretty cold already too so I'm picturing it with nice thick tights, and it doesn't seem figure-hugging or revealing.

In what way is it sending the "wrong message?"  I mean this totally respectfully, I am actually just truly curious.

I'm curious to this too!  What type of halloween costume IS age appropriate for a 12 year old.  Like a PP said, you can't expect a 12 year old to want to dress like a Disney princess.  Perhaps this needs its own thread....

  • It's extremely short and very sexy.  I think it's very inappropriate for a 12 yr old.  And as I said above, I think something like this is too revealing for a 16 yr old as well.  I think parents allowing their young daughters to dress like this is half the reason why we have shows on TV which are about teen pregnancy. I think this is why we have 22 yr old high school teachers having sex with their students.  (Is it right, GOD NO...but this is fact)  When I was in high school, no one dressed like that.  Prom dresses covered our bodies...have you seen what 15-16 yr olds wear to the prom now.  Society has our young girls looking like mini adults. When you OK that, they start acting like mini adults.  It's all a vicious and sad cycle.  I am a strong believer in keeping our young girls, young.

  • The model is standing in a seductive pose, but I still think its too sexy for a 12 yr old.  I am definitely not modest or a prude when it comes to myself, but I just can't accept young girls looking like this.

    This.

I might encourage her to wear a tank top underneath, too. :)

This is exactly what I was thinking (and I'm pretty prude) :) I think you get to pick out the tights/leggings she wears and that's the deal. You can go as opaque as you want. Even if want you could have her wear a tank top or even a long sleeve shirt underneath (it might actually look cute with the long sleeve...a little punky)

  • Well.... I think it "could" be okay if it was altered... definitely with leggings, a tank top or shirt underneath, maybe if anyone is crafty they can help by adjusting the costume so that its more fun and little kid like and not as inappropriate. But wearing it as is.... definitely not for a 12 yr old!!!

Ok, I do totally agree with this. It drives me crazy what girls wear to proms, etc. We have middle school dances where they can dress up at the end of the year. It's horrible what some girls show up in, and we have to turn away a bunch.

I guess, go with your gut. If you don't like it, stand your ground.
