Working out PP

When did you start working out again after DC #1?  And how about DC#2 if you have one?

When I got pregnant, I was working out 5 days/week and I was in the best shape of my life.  I even worked out with my trainer until I was about 7 months pregnant.  However, I ate junk food the entire time I was pregnant and gained a lot of extra weight.  It was sooo worth it though! :)  Now, I keep setting goals of when I'm going to get to the gym but I still haven't made it.  I have a bunch of workout equipment here at the house too and I can't even manage to do that.  I'm lacking the energy and motivation.  I'd rather spend time with my baby girl.  I still have 14 lbs to go, which I'm not too worried about, but I need my clothes to fit before I go back to work!

How do you do it?!  Motivate me, please!

Re: Working out PP

  • I started to work out after being given the green light at my 6 week PP check up, but I still have not been doing anything on a regular basis. Starting this week DH and I both have committed to getting back on track.  Here is my plan:

    Me

Tuesday, Thursday - Work out before work (I do 45 - 30 min depending on how I wake up).  DH does morning routine and takes DS to daycare

Wednesday - Work out after work (1 hour spinning class).  DH picks DS up at daycare

    Saturday/Sunday - 45 minutes - 1 hour, various activities.

It's a struggle to find the time, but we are working at it.

  • I hate to say this, but a lot of my pre-baby clothes (particularly pants) never fit again, even after I lost the weight with Maggie. Some things I just started fitting back into when I got pregnant with Owen 13 months later. Not to be a negatron.

Well...with Maggie, once she started sleeping better (around 6-7 months) I would get up at 6 a couple days a week and go to the gym before Mike left for work at 7:30.

This time around, I was going regularly while still on mat leave, but now that I'm back to work my whopping 2.5 days a week, I suddenly seem to have no time (frankly, no motivation or interest) to get back to the gym. I don't want to take the kids on my days off to the play area (I've got a lot of excuses as to why-might Maggie freak out? what about germs?) I don't want to get up early since Owen wakes anywhere between 4 and 6 to eat and we've been staying up later than we used to because Mike's been working a lot at home in the evenings, so it's our only time to spend together.

So the long and short of it is I need motivation too. I really haven't lost a single pound since Owen was 5 weeks old, I've got 18 to go.

Ditto. I'm in pretty much the same boat.  Except Katie is a year older than Owen.  I need to lose about 10 to get to my pre-pregnancy weight and then probably another 10 to get to my wedding weight (we ate a lot of pizza on the honeymoon).

I've been going to spinning on the weekends, and that's helping a little but, but it's not a dramatic weight loss.  I just lack discipline and motivation, and I've been to busy at work to be able to cut out right at 4:30 to make it to the gym to get a good workout in before I need to go pick up K at daycare.  Working out in the morning just seems like a hilarious impossibility for me.

  • I really don't have the time (or the motivation to be honest) to go to the gym anymore. It takes time away from my family.... and we don't get a lot of family time together!

What we've done is bought a jogging stroller and when DH gets home from work we go for a run as a family. (Depending on weather of course!) But it's been really great... I love to work out with DH, we keep each other motivated and Noah loves being outside. After he goes to bed we do the 30 day shred.

It's not as intense as before DS, but it works. We stay active and healthy and don't lose family time going to the gym.

  • I take Zumba once a week. If it were offered twice a week, I'd go. Knowing that I've paid for each individual class has been a great motivator. I feel like if I just had an open pass, like I do for the Kettering Rec, I'd never go, but having paid motivates me.

I agree with Kristen, though-- after pregnancy, your body is still not the same. I had issues gaining weight during pregnancy so I actually lost all my weight except for about four pounds almost immediately, but I still did not even remotely fit into my clothes. I actually had to buy up two whole sizes when I went back to work at 5 months post-partum. It was not until about a year and a couple of months after having Leah that my clothes finally fit again. I think your body just changes in all kinds of weird ways that sometimes have nothing to do with actual weight.

  • I'm in the same boat as you Sara--I have about 15lbs I want to lose before we start ttc again (I am at my pre-pg weight now but I wasnt happy w/ that weight before I got pg and I know having more kids is just going to make it harder to work out) I agree w/ the other women though its really a motivation issue-- I would rather relax and spend time w/ DH and DS than work out...and yea I could work out for the 45 mins during the day that Nicholas naps but I would rather use that as "me time" doing something I enjoy like reading, catching up w/ friends on the phone or just relaxing and watching tv...personally if I used exercise during my "me time" I would be miserable since I hate working out so much haha

I was doing good for a while doing 30day shred and going for walks but like I said it was just a while (a few weeks and I didnt lose any weight during those few weeks). Sorry I dont have much advice other than to try and implement your time w/ DD and DH to your workouts (family walks at night?)

    1. I gained 45 lbs with DS1.  I like to use the thyroid "excuse," but I never lost more than 25 lbs of that weight...no.matter.what I did/ate (or didn't do/eat).
    2. That said, none of my pre-preg clothing even came close to fitting PP; and, at this point, it's sad to say that I've pretty much lost hope of that ever happening.
    3. Again, perhaps it is far too convenient to blame my PP thyroid issues and B-12 deficiency; but I just never found the energy to really stick to any sort of workout routine, PP.  However, I know that I need to make this happen after DS2 is born.  I just don't know how I'll be able to fit it in...
    4. Clearly, I'm no help; but I just wanted to chime in so that you don't wind up thinking "everyone else is doing it/did it, why can't I?".  It's tough and you just don't have the "me" time to spend on the routines, etc. that you had pre-preg.
  • I just talked to my doctor's office because I'm feeling pretty ready to get back to exercising. They said I can do what I was doing during the pregnancy. I have been mall walking almost every day, and now I'm planning on doing yoga DVDs and the programs on my cable's On Demand. I'm also going to do some light upper body weights at home.

As far as motivation, I'm just going to do a few minutes at a time while Nora naps in the living room during the day.

Once I hit 6 weeks, I think I'll be looking for motivation to get to the gym, too. Can you trade off with Emery - have him watch Stella while you go to the gym for an hour? If you set up weekly or twice a week training sessions, you'll be committed to meeting your trainer (and you're paying for it!) so that might give you a schedule that you can stick to. Also, what about meeting a friend for a spin or aerobics class? I always manage to stick to a schedule when I have someone that's counting on me being there.

  • I think i'm going to go for a run tonight, but I haven't done anything except sit ups and push ups at this point. I did my first aerobic class about 5-6 weeks after I had Ashlyn. I think you just have to read your body.  Don't take time away from being with Stell, but also make sure you do take time for yourself and let yourself get back to feeling good about yourself.  A baby body is beautiful, but feeling like yourself again is GREAT too!
  • I was cleared to workout last week when Mr. O was four-weeks-old. I've done a combination of things... woken up early, used help from DH and the grandparents, and incorporated my exercises into his "tummy time" (he practices push-ups while I'm doing crunches).

I combat the guilt by thinking about all the hours I spend with him. Plus, I know working out will give me the energy to be a better Mama. And energy is something I can definitely use!

I'm trying to not think about the closet full of clothes that may never fit me again. They don't matter to DH - until he realizes how much they cost to replace :P - and they don't matter to Mr. O. But my health is important to both of them.

    GL!
