does anyone have a baby who was diagnosed with iugr?

i found out today that my unborn son has iugr and is in the 10 percentile for his size. I'm 31 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Was looking for more info and what to expect from iugr. Please help

Re: does anyone have a baby who was diagnosed with iugr?

  • My son had IUGR. He was born at 39w and weighed 5lbs 2 oz. At our 35 week u/s only his stomach was measuring 2 weeks behind. At our 39 week u/s he was measuring 3 weeks behind and we were induced the next day. He was born via c section. He was also hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and needed a glucose drip and NICU time for 8 days.

He has since packed on the weight and his completely fine. At his 2 week pediatrician appt he was in the 5th percentile for weight. Currently he is about 9.5 lbs.

It's scary, but everything I have read/doctors, etc... have said that he most likely will catch up with his weight gain.

    Good luck to you :)

  • I am in the same situation, with twins. After their 30 weeks growth scan, I got a call from my doctor that the twins are measuring in the 5th and 7th percentile for growth. She said we'll wait two weeks to see if they are still growing ( since they are simliar in size) or if it's definately IUGR, or a placenta issue, etc. The waiting is the worst! Up until 26 weeks they were charting in the the 76th percentile.

Good Luck to you! It is a stressful time.

  • I wouldn't get too worried about it just yet. We were terrified when my Dr told us the news that DD was IUGR. She measured behind the whole pregnancy, and as I got closer to the end, she kept getting further and further behind. At 32 weeks, she was estimated at 3lb and in the 14th percentile. At 34 weeks, she was estimated at 3lb 10oz and in the 10th percentile for weight, 5th percentile for growth. Finally, at 36 weeks, she was estimated at 4lb 6oz, in the bottom 5th percentile for weight and in the bottom 2 percent for growth. Since she was IUGR, my Dr went ahead and induced me at 36 weeks, since DD was no longer thought to be thriving in the womb.

She was born at 4lb 10oz, 18in. She is a small baby, and we have had some weight gain issues (still) since then. We are on a strict every 2 hour eating policy, per her pediatrician. She is 6 1/2 weeks

  • Hi! I wouldn't worry too much (easier said than done I know!).  My little one was diagnosed with IUGR shortly after the 20 week ultrasound and I was stressed out ever since.  Her weight was always around the 15th percentile and her abdominal circumference was always around the 10th percentile (which is what they were most concerned about).  I am now 38 weeks and at my last two ultrasounds she has had quite the growth spurt and is now in the 54th pecentile for weight.  My doctor had said throughout that the worst thing that could happen is that I would have to be induced a bit early so she could receive what she needs outside since she isn't getting it inside for some reason.  He said the whole diagnosis of IUGR sounds a lot worse than it is in 99% of the cases.  Hope this reassures you a bit!
