nbr - I have a makeup question

Backstory: My career coach suggested that I wear more makeup. I've never been a huge makeup person (normally just mascara and maybe eye shadow) but I thought WTH I might as well because this guy knows what he's talking about.

So today I spent a good amount of time applying my makeup. It looks good. When I got to work he complimented me and said that it was perfect, with the exception of needing a little more emphasis on my eyes.

I don't have long eye lashes. I wear brown/black mascara and I have a semi-dark but still nude eye shadow. How do I make my eyes have more emphasis? (without liquid eye liner - I'm not a fan of it.)

Re: nbr - I have a makeup question

  • A little bit of dark eyeshadow on the outside corner of your eye will make them stand out more, you could also try putting an eyeshadow a little darker than the one on the lid along the crease of your eyelid.

    Hope this makes sense!

Do you use a brow pencil? Even if you wax or shape your brows otherwise (plucking), a correct shade of brow pencil to fill them in a bit/define them can make your eyes pop. I use minimal makeup daily, too - just undereye concealer, mascara, and brow pencil!

  • Black mascara makes the eyes pop, too. I use the Double Extend from Loreal. It has a base coat that you apply before the actual mascara, which makes your eyelashes longer. Sounds funky, but it really works.

  • There is a YouTube channel that I LOVE LOVE LOVE for makeup tips. There are dozens of different videos she does that feature different looks, so just scroll through and find the one you want. I think this one would be good for a professional setting.

  • Pics of my eyes below. Hope this helps

Normal everyday eyes ( for me) Just a little eyeliner on bottom, mascara, and light eyeshadow.

You've peaked my interest as well. I understand what a career coach is, but why do you have one? Is it someone through your current employer? Someone you hired personally? And I don't understand the emphasis on makeup if it is to move up to a higher position at your current job. Wouldn't they know what you looked like by now? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm just curious.

I have one because my current position is a senior level with only one level higher. I placed a bid for the higher position and I have my first 2 interviews tomorrow. This is someone through my current employer. The emphasis on makeup is because of appearance. The position I have bid on is a position in which I would need to be very clean cut and polished for.

And yes they know what I look like, but like I said, it's a higher level - I need to step it up a few notches.

  • Do you curl your lashes? Mine aren't long either, but I use my blowdryer to heat up an eyelash curler, curl them, then apply 1-2 coats of waterproof mascara.

I know you said no liquid liner, but I like Bobbi Brown's gel liner. I'm a fan of the shades with "shimmer" in the name. They are much softer (and easier to apply, IMO). A little on the top lid, plus a tightline on the bottom with a dark brown pencil would go a long way.

  • I don't wear much makeup either.  I only wear concealer under my eyes, mascara, eyeshadow and blush.  Have you tried applying a darker eyeshadow color to the crease of your lid?  Just put a light color as your base.  I usually do a shimmery beige or nude color and then apply a plum, navy or dark brown in the creases.

  • Am I the only one that thinks what your career coach suggested is a bit.... weird?  So you have to wear makeup to be taken seriously for a promotion?  Then once you have makeup on he tells you that you need more?  What is he, a MAC consultant?

I worked in HR for years and yes a clean and professional appearance does help you in the job market but him suggesting that you have to wear makeup then telling you that you need more sounds a bit sexist.  IMO.

I think it's strange too. My workplace offers individual development and career planning. If I had asked for help and they offered suggestions to do with my makeup, I would probably ask for someone else to help me.

Presentation is a big part of the job I'm applying for. The person in this position has to look good, so I don't think it's weird. Think, public relations.
