Changing table problems..

DH thinks we do not need a changing table. He rambles on about how its a waste of money and how often will we use it and blah blah. He even took a poll at work of how many people do or did use a changing table. I, on the other hand, think we need one. I just dont know how to justify it to him and change his mind!

Re: Changing table problems..

  • Are you wanting a separate changing table or wanting to put a changing pad on a dresser?  Honestly I kinda agree with your DH.  Unless you have a big nursery where space is not an issue and money isn't as well, don't understand the reason behind the changing table when you can just use the dresser top.  Just my opinion though.  Hopefully you guys can reach an agreement.

  • we used one until ahe was like 2.  I would rather do that than change on the floor.  But, our house is one level except for our bedroom. If the nursery was upstairs, I think we would have used it less, just me being too lazy to go upstairs to change a diaper unless it was when we were up there going to bed/getting up/changing clothes, etc
  • I always used mine for the girls. Nothing like changing a baby in random spots around the house and end up with pee or poop on the sofa or bed. Its like you have a bath room to do your business a baby needs a spot for all their changing needs.

A changing table is safe, you can have all the baby items in one spot instead of the coffee table.  It can hold extra clothes and anything else you may need.

  • I think changing tables are a waste - we just used the floor/bed. Can you compromise and get a dresser and put the changing pad on top? It'll be much more useful over time that way.
  • adding that no, we did not have a seperate one, it was a pad that attached to the top of our dresser, so when we were done with it, we just took it off and had the dresser...are talking about a seperate one or a pad on a dresser?
  • You know, you'll see a lot of women on this board tell you you don't need one, but I for one LOVED having one. It was extra storage, it was convenient and it served it's purpose well! If you have the room for it, I say get one.
  • We got one that is a dresser as well.  That way even after the diapers, it is still a function piece of furniture instead of just turning into a shelf.
  • My son is 2 and I still change his diaper on there to this day... As some ladies mentioned, I also have the dresser/changing table combo and I love it. You're obviously going to need a place for baby's clothes so why not get something that can do both right!?!

  • I have a high/low changing table so the high part of the table, I had a diaper basket (from pottery barn) with all the diaper needs in it.  It was a dresser, so I had the clothes right there too.  I have a 2 story house, so, I would end up changing downstairs as well.  It's nice when your upstairs to have a "place" to change baby but your not going to hike upstairs every time there needs to be a diaper change.  So, you will be using your floor or maybe the pack n play downstairs.  Also, DS got way to tall/big/heavy to lift up there once he hit, 18 months or so, so we would just get it done on the floor.

So, it's a nice to have thing, if you have the space or get one thats a dresser and make use out of it, like we did.  I still used my "changing table" once we stopped changing diapers up there because it was still a dresser.

If your going to have more kids, it's a justifiable purchase, as you will use it again and again.  Plus as PP mentioned, it is a functioning piece of furniture to store clothes in!

  • If you do really want one and money is a concern, we found one that looked rarely used at Once Upon a Child for $30.
  • Back when I had my girls there werent the dresser changing table combos.  I like this idea much better then gettting two sperate items.

  • I still use mine for DD, but if space is an issue...I suppose you could get by without one.  I really liked having one in the beginning, since I had a c-section and bending down was extremely uncomfortable.
  • We are also going with the changing pad/dresser combo. The room we are putting the baby in is to small for two pieces.

  • I could see both sides.
We decided to go with a dresser and put a changing pad on it that screws to the back - that way when baby doesnt need the actual table, s/he still has a nice dresser that can be used. Felt like it was a good compromise. And I can use two of the drawers for changing/diaper needs. (We are lucky here too since baby has the biggest closet in the house with a great organization system already in, other the the ones in our master bedroom!)

  • We had a low dresser for my son and just put a changing pad on top.  It worked great but we only used it on there for 9 months until he got too wiggly up there.

  • Our changing table is a dresser with 3 big drawers as well, and if we weren't having another LO right now DD would still use it as a regular dresser with her big girl bed when we get that. We got ours a JC Penney and my DH thought it would be a waste ( I think the ones without dressers kind of are) but let me tell you I needed the space! My child has so many clothes it is not even funny. Aside from that, now that she is mobile is is nearly impossible to change her diaper without a wrestling match, unless we are on the changing table, it is the only time she is at least not trying to roll over and crawl away from me.

  • We also used the changing table/dresser combo.  We got a pretty inexpensive one at wal-mart.  Now that baby #2 is on the way, I'm going to get my daughter a new dresser and just move the dresser/changing table to the baby's room.

  • We plan to get a dresser and just put the changing pad on top of it (kill 2 birds with 2 stone). Like 1 of the PPs said, I'd hate to get pee and poop on the furniture or floor.
Three angel babies...I think it's time for a change
  • We aren't using a dresser in the nursery at all. Instead, DH's grandfather is building us a changing table. The one is he building us has rows of shelving underneath that we are going to fill with canvas baskets and one row will be for changing things (diapers, wipes, etc) and the other will be for what we would have put in the dresser. So it's kind of like the dresser/changing table combo. For space purposes this will work best for us.
  • We did the dresser with the changing pad. It's fantastic.I find DD tries to get away when she's being changed anywhere but up high. I keep a basket on top with all the changing needs and it works perfectly. When DD was small and sleeping in our room we did the same thing on the dresser next to our bed.

  • We just use a changing pad on the dresser. Easy peasy. Plus then you aren't left with a useless piece of furniture once the kid is potty trained.
  • Thanks ladies. Tonight I will tell him about the dresser idea. I just cant see changing our baby on the floor all the time. Especially, the nasty ones. Also, since we have three dogs I can just see one time or another having to fight the dogs to go away or even stealing the diaper.

  • The changing table we bought for our son is a 3-drawer dresser with a cabinet as well.  It matched his crib and we wanted it to be something that could be used as he grew up and he could take with him when he moves out.  We'll be buying something similar for these babies, though we'll only buy one instead of one for each.  We can get the other baby a dresser when they get older.

  • I loved having a changing table for my children. If you have the room I say go for it. The extra shelf space also comes in handy as the toys build up and they will build up.

  • I love mine.....we just bought a dresser and put the pad on top, it is great because I can change her diaper and clothes super easy because they are all right there. Also my little girl was bad about peeing right after you took off her diaper so I would have had messes all over the house instead of just on the pad.
