Renting a breast pump from a hospital?

Is it really worth it to purchase a breast pump? I mean, you don't breast feed SUPER long...and I DO plan to breast feed. I don't feel comfortable buying used form random people but I know hospitals rent and that leads to sanitary pumps. What do you think?

Re: Renting a breast pump from a hospital?

  • Pump rental was so expensive that 2-3 months of renting=buying a pump.  I BF for 19 months and probably used the pump for 10 months, and that was with me SAH

  • I would honestly just buy one.

Yes, the pumps at the hospital are great but I used the hospital pump for 3 weeks while DS was in NICU and then when he came home used my Medela PIS and I actually liked my PIS better.

Also, I used it for 10 months as I EPed and plan to use it again for about 12 months with this child. In the long run the $280 purchase only is costing me about  12.75 a month when you break it down.

  • I would just buy one. Renting one can get expensive.

Plus, there are always coupons at BRU and you can also use your registry completion coupons to buy one   Having a good pump will make a huge difference in whether you succeed in BF or not.

  • Double check the actual cost of renting.  With our rentals we still needed to buy parts that made it the same cost as purchasing.  Like pp mentioned if you have another child you will cut the cost even more.  I had the Avent ISISI IQ and loved it.

  • We rented for DD and are renting again.  It was helpful for us because I only bf'ed for 3 months.  However, if you plan to bf for a prolonged period of time, purchasing may save you money.
