Anyone dealt with thrush and BF?

Just figured out that DS and I have thrush.  At first I just had the painful nipples with peeling at the base.  I had no shooting pains and he had no white patches in his mouth.  Well the shooting pain started yesterday and I found the white patch in his mouth today.  Anyone else had to deal with this? What were your treatments and were you able to breastfeed throughout? We are going to MD for his 2 month appt tomorrow anyway but any advice would be appreciated!

  • The pedi told me to stop nursing.  However, I have heard that as long as you both are being treated at the same time, then you can keep breastfeeding.  I don't know why they told me to stop.  I'm being treated with diflucan (from my OB) and some nipple ointment.  DS is taking Nystatin.  I've been told (from other people on here) that it doesn't work very well.  We might try something else along with the Nystatin if it doesn't seem to be doing much.  I'm also going to try to sterilize everything each time it is used.  I want this to be over as quickly as possible.  Good luck!  I hope we all get better very very soon!

  • We kept breastfeeding, and were both treated at the same time.  LO got Nystatin drops that have to be rubbed along his gums and I was given Nystatin cream to apply to my nipples twice a day.  That was a week ago and it seems to be clearing it up.

  • We kept breastfeeding.  We tried Nystatin and it didn't work.  We switched to 1/2 apple cider vinegar and 1/2 water (put on a q-tip and applied to her mouth and my nipples), and it finally cleared up.

Your pedi told you to stop nursing?! WOW

I had it pretty bad and while it can be rough, it is definitely treatable. What worked best for me was cleaning my nipples with apple cidar vinagar mixed with water after each feeding and then applying Dr Newmans All Purpose Nipple Ointment. You need an Rx from your OB and to have it filled at a compound pharmacy but it is so worth it. Diflucan and Nastatin didnt work for me.

  • I had it so bad with DD#1 - I EPed - my milk was pink - from the blood.  It eventually went away.  Honestly I don't remember what the dr gave me-it was 10 years ago.  I had had my gullblader removed at 7 weeks pp and the thrush was caused by the antibiotics they gave me.  It was painful, but I pushed through it and pumped all the way to 5 months.

    Good luck

  • Yup. I got diflican for me. DS had no signs of it anymore. (He did and it seems to have gone away on its own). And I've been doing the apple cider vinegar on my nipples after each credit and if I notice any spots in ds's mouth I will do the acv with him too. But his pediatric said he is getting the diflican through the breastmilk...oh and I take 2 acidophilus pills a day.
